The various chapters have been written by specialists from North America, Europe and Asia, making for unsurpassed depth and breadth of coverage. Topics addressed include fundamental vortex flows (mixing layer vortices, vortex rings, wake vortices, vortex stability, etc.), industrial and environmental vortex flows (aero-propulsion system vortices, vortex-structure interaction, atmospheric vortices, computational methods with vortices, etc.), and multiphase vortex flows (free-surface effects, vortex cavitation, and bubble and particle interactions with vortices). The book can also be recommended as an advanced graduate-level supplementary textbook. The first nine chapters of the book are suitable for a one-term course; chapters 10--19 form the basis for a second one-term course.

Fundamentals of Cavitation

Fundamentals of Cavitation PDF Author: Jean-Pierre Franc
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402022336
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 321

Book Description
This book treats cavitation, which is a unique phenomenon in the field of hyd- dynamics, although it can occur in any hydraulic machinery such as pumps, propellers, artificial hearts, and so forth. Cavitation is generated not only in water, but also in any kind of fluid, such as liquid hydrogen. The generation of cavitation can cause severe damage in hydraulic machinery. Therefore, the prevention of cavitation is an important concern for designers of hydraulic machinery. On the contrary, there is great potential to utilize cavitation in various important applications, such as environmental protection. There have been several books published on cavitation, including one by the same authors. This book differs from those previous ones, in that it is both more physical and more theoretical. Any theoretical explanation of the cavitation phenomenon is rather difficult, but the authors have succeeded in explaining it very well, and a reader can follow the equations easily. It is an advantage in reading this book to have some understanding of the physics of cavitation. Therefore, this book is not an introductory text, but a book for more advanced study. However, this does not mean that this book is too difficult for a beginner, because it explains the cavitation phenomenon using many figures. Therefore, even a beginner on cavitation can read and can understand what cavitation is. If the student studies through this book (with patience), he or she can become an expert on the physics of cavitation.

In Fascination of Fluid Dynamics

In Fascination of Fluid Dynamics PDF Author: Arie Biesheuvel
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401149860
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 502

Book Description
In Fascination of Fluid Dynamics contains a collection of papers by international experts in hydrodynamics, based on oral presentations at a symposium held in honour of Professor Leen van Wijngaarden on his 65th birthday. The book begins with a personal sketch of his life and scientific career. It continues with a mixture of papers that address recent developments in various branches of fluid mechanics. Many of the papers cover different aspects of multiphase flows: bubble dynamics, cavitation, bubbles and particles in turbulent flows, suspension flows, and wave phenomena in fluidised beds. Other topics that are addressed include: dynamics of jets, shock waves, MHD turbulence, selforganisation phenomena in 2D turbulence, vortex rings and the thermodynamics of tropical cyclones. This edited volume will be valuable reading for researchers, engineers and students interested in hydrodynamics, and in particular in multiphase flows.

Hydraulic Machinery and Cavitation

Hydraulic Machinery and Cavitation PDF Author: Enrique Cabrera
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780792342083
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 686

Book Description
Hydraulic machinery such as turbines and pumps is widely used around the world. Related topics concerning design, operation and maintenance are of relevant interest. In this context, cavitation is a phenomenon to be taken into account, and this was treated in the XVIII IAHR Symposium on Hydraulic Machinery and Cavitation which took place in Valencia, Spain, 16th-19th September, 1996 and which was hosted by the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

Cavitation in Non-Newtonian Fluids

Cavitation in Non-Newtonian Fluids PDF Author: Emil Brujan
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642153437
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 274

Book Description
Non-Newtonian properties on bubble dynamics and cavitation are fundamentally different from those of Newtonian fluids. The most significant effect arises from the dramatic increase in viscosity of polymer solutions in an extensional flow, such as that generated about a spherical bubble during its growth or collapse phase. In addition, many biological fluids, such as blood, synovial fluid, and saliva, have non-Newtonian properties and can display significant viscoelastic behaviour. This monograph elucidates general aspects of bubble dynamics and cavitation in non-Newtonian fluids and applies them to the fields of biomedicine and bioengineering. In addition it presents many examples from the process industries. The field is strongly interdisciplinary and the numerous disciplines involve have and will continue to overlook and reinvent each others’ work. This book helps researchers to think intuitively about the diverse physics of these systems, to attempt to bridge the various communities involved, and to convey the interest, elegance, and variety of physical phenomena that manifest themselves on the micrometer and microsecond scales.

Jets, Wakes, and Cavities

Jets, Wakes, and Cavities PDF Author: Zarantonello Eduardo H.
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323162711
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 367

Book Description
Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, Volume 2: Jets, Wakes, and Cavities provides a systematic discussion of jets, wakes, and cavities. This book focuses on the general aspects of ideal fluid theory and examines the engineering applications of fluid dynamics. Organized into 15 chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the different types of jets and explores the atomization of jets in carburetors in connection with gasoline engine design. This text then emphasizes the formal treatment of special flows and examines the flows that are bounded by flat plates and free streamlines. Other chapters consider the flows that are bounded by the cavity behind a symmetric wedge. This book discusses as well the intuitive momentum and similarity considerations. The final chapter deals with several surprising physical complications. Mathematician, physicists, engineers, and readers interested in the fields of applied mathematics, experimental physics, hydraulics, and aeronautics will find this book extremely useful.
