Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of the Nearctic Hemiptera-Heteroptera Dr. Uhler 5 List has been very useful, but it was only a list, included Mexican Species, and is now twenty years behind hand. The difficulties that I met have been largely eased by the kindness of Mr. Otto Heidemann, and especially valuable has been his help in the Capsidm, placing in my hands some of his manuscript notes. No order of American insects has been so largely con trolled by Europeans as the Heteroptera. Not only have they described most of our species, but these descriptions are often in societies little known to American entomologist, and almost none of them in entomological journals. Volume after volume of our entomological journals is issued without a single article on Heteroptera, and when one is found it is short, or only a list of names, It is hoped that this cata logue will encourage entomologists to devote more time to this order, so that our forms will be better known to us. True Bugs (Heteroptera) of the Neotropics

True Bugs (Heteroptera) of the Neotropics PDF Author: Antônio R. Panizzi
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9401798613
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 904

Book Description
True bugs (Heteroptera) are a diverse and complex group of plant-feeding and predatory insects important to food production, human health, the global economy and the environment. Within the nearly 43,000 species described around the world, Neotropical true bugs are particularly diverse, and much remains to be discovered about their biology and relations with other species. Inspired by the need for a comprehensive assessment, True Bugs (Heteroptera) of the Neotropics is the most complete and thorough review ever published. Experts in each of the seven infraorders have drawn together the scattered literature to provide detailed treatments of each major taxon. The most common and important species as well as select lesser known species in each major family are covered, highlighting morphology, classification, biology and ecology. The numerous color illustrations highlight key species and their adaptations, and importance to basic and applied sciences is discussed. Each chapter is based on an up-to-date review of the literature, and with a bibliography of more than 3,000 references, readers are presented with an unprecedented and vital and timely account of the true bugs of the Neotropical Region.

Trogossitidae: A review of the beetle family, with a catalogue and keys

Trogossitidae: A review of the beetle family, with a catalogue and keys PDF Author: Jiri Kolibac
Publisher: PenSoft Publishers LTD
ISBN: 954642711X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
This monograph contents a review of the beetle family Trogossitidae (Cleroidea). The worldwide distributed family includes 55 recent and 10 extinct genera with about 600 species that are classified within 3 subfamilies and 12 tribes. In spite of fewer number of species, Trogossitidae is morphologically and ecologically extremely diversified. There are four-eyed predators that fly, run and even jump around swiftly in forest clearings to contrast with slow-moving, fungivorous species that dwell under the bark of old trees. There are also species that squat on flowers to feed on pollen grains as well as minute creatures that have been extracted from forest litter. Brief descriptions of all genera as well as keys to all higher taxa are provided. All known species and subspecies are listed, together with complete taxonomic references back to 1910, the date of issue of their last catalogue. The work includes maps of distribution of all genera, colour photographs of generic representatives, SEM photographs and remarks on a phylogeny of particular taxa.
