Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of Coins, Tokens, and Medals in the Numismatic Collection of the Mint of the United States at Philadelphia, Pa With the view of relieving to some extent the money stringency oi the colony, Massachusetts in 1651 projected a mint for the coinage of silver. Preliminary arrangements were speedily made, and in the following year the mint was opened at Boston and began operations by striking the almost plain New England Shilling (pl. 1, the Sixpence and Threepence. The standard of fineness of the new coin was the same as the correspond ing English coin. It is very improbable that there was any intention to continue long such a simple form of coin as this piece is, being in fact but little more than a plain disk. For it must have been apparent at once that the coins could be easily clid and also fraudulently washed until their weight and value were seriously reduced. It is very likely that the exceedingly simple form of the first issue was the result of great haste to get the mint into operation, and that the preparation of other and more suitable dies was begun at once on the opening of the mint, and that they were put into use as soon as completed. At any rate, in the same year of 1652, the series with a tree on the obverse and on the reverse N EW eng lan D ano. With the date and value within a beaded circle, was begun. Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of the Magnificent Collection of Coins of the United States Formed by John G. Mills, Esq., Albany, New York They have nearly all came from famous cabinets and as Mr. Mills has in nearly every case preserved the pedigree of previous ownership as it may be termed, we have stated them in many instances in our catalogue. It is important to do so, not only on account of the examples themselves, but to prevent the feeling arising in the minds of collectors that additional specimens are appearing when they are the same pieces that have been known in previous collections. Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of the Collection of American Colonial and State Coins, United States Coins and Foreign Crowns, the Property of Clarence S. Bement, Esq. Mr. Clarence S. Bement has given me instructions to sell to the highest bidder at auction his collection of American Colonial, State and United States coins; also Foreign gold, silver and copper coins. He is a gentleman who spared no expense to procure as fine examples as possi ble, and at two of my great sales, the Earle and Baldwin collections, he made liberal purchases of many of the gems, so that the collector, in perusing the following pages, must at once be struck with the superlative condition of the coins. The cents are superb, and for one, the 1793 Liberty Cap, Mr. Bement paid me $500, the greatest price ever obtained for any U. S. Cent. The next highest price a U. S. Cent has ever brought was $37 5 for the wreath cent in the Sisson collection, sold by me on April 12 and 13, 1916, and of which Mr. Bement has an even more wonderful specimen, for his is bright red - original color. Collectors may feel sure of the coins meeting the descriptions in the catalogue, for I take great pains to carefully describe each item - not overrating - and if damaged or defective the fact has been mentioned; so bid all the lot is worth to you and you will not be disappointed.
