Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of Romances in the Department of Manuscripts in the British Museum, Vol. 1 IN the present Catalogue it is proposed to give a precise account of the ms. Sources of Romance in the British Museum. Its scope is not limited to a description of those works which by their connection with the various cycles or by their own con struction can claim the title of Romances, but it also embraces a larger class of literature which more or less directly has to do with the subject. It is thus that, on the one hand, such large works as Geoffrey of Monmouth's History, and, on the other, such small pieces as isolated ballads or tales are included. Taking into account also the bibliographical and literary information with which the descriptions are accompanied, and the critical analysis to which the different texts have been submitted, it is hoped that the Catalogue may serve not only as a guide to the Museum collection, but also, to some extent, as a handbook to the subject.
