Book Description
Excerpt from The Coinage of Egypt: A. H. 358-922 Under the Fatimee Khaleefehs, the Ayyoobees, and the Memlook Sultans; Classes Xiva. XV. XVI The Fatimee series in the British Museum begins with the coins of el-mahdee. Unfortunately it possesses no Specimen of that sew/idea issue of aboo-'abd-a11ah, the real establisher of the Fatimee power, on which, it is said, were engraved these inscriptions Praise be to God, the Lord of the worlds, ' and I have accomplished the witness of God, ' and Let the enemies of God be dispersed.' But from el-mahdee onwards every Khaleefeh is represented. The greater part of this series offers a singularly mono tonous aspect; the same formulas and the same mint names occur over and over again with little or no variation. There are, however, a few coins which demand separate notice here, either on account of their rarity, or in explanation of my readings.
