Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of Coins in the Punjab Museum, Lahore, Vol. 1: Indo-Greek Coins This volume describes the Collection of Indo-Greek coins in the Lahore Museum, Panjab, India. I have applied the term Indo-Greek to the issues of the Greek Kings of Bactria and India, and of their contemporaries and immediate successors in North-West India, who struck money bearing legible Greek inscriptions. These were the Indo-Scythic and Indo-Parthian dynasties, and the Great Kushans, down to and including Vasu Deva. The coins in the Lahore Museum were contained in two separate Collections. One was the Government Collection proper, and the other was the Cabinet of Mr. C. J. Rodgers, a well-known figure in Indian numismatics, a Collection which was purchased by the Panjab Government. Mr. Rodgers prepared Catalogues under official auspices, both of the Government Collection and of his own Cabinet; and these were printed at the Baptist Mission Press, Calcutta, in the years 1892 to 1894. Neither work was illustrated, a fact which has detracted much from their value. In the Preface to one of the Parts of his Catalogue, Mr. Rodgers mentions the fact that at the beginning of his career as a coin collector, he specialised in the issues of the Indo-Greeks. Ancient India

Ancient India PDF Author: Ramesh Chandra Majumdar
Publisher: Motilal Banarsidass Publ.
ISBN: 9788120804364
Category : India
Languages : en
Pages : 580

Book Description
This is a comprehensive, intelligible and interesting portrait of Ancient Indian History and Civilization from a national historical point of view. The work is divided into three broad divisions of the natural course of cultural development in Ancient India: (1) From the prehistoric age to 600 B.C., (2) From 600 B.C. to 300 A.D., (3) From 300 A.D. to 1200 A.D. The work describes the political, economic, religious and cultural conditions of the country, the expansionist activities, the colonisation schemes of her rulers in the Far East. Political theories and administrative organizations are also discussed but more stress has been laid on the religious, literary and cultural aspects of Ancient India. The book is of a more advanced type. It would meet the needs not only of general readers but also of earnest students who require a thorough grasp of the essential facts and features before taking up specialized study in any branch of the subject. It would also fulfil requirements of the candidates for competitive examinations in which Ancient Indian History and culture is a prescribed subject.

Book Description
In this third volume covering the flourishing period from the third to the eighth century A.D., scholars describe the powerful role played by the Sasanian state in Iran, the Gupta empire in India and the T'ang dynasty in China. Waves of nomadic migrations and the formation of steppe empires left their mark on political and social life. This multiethnic society had its roots in the great religious traditions of Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism, Christianity and Shamanism. The Islamization of a great part of the region brought fundamental changes to all aspects of life. Intensive trade along the Silk Route encouraged cultural and scientific exchanges, making this period one of impressive artistic and intellectual creativity.
