Excerpt from Catalogue of Baylor University at Waco, Texas, 1896-'97: Fifty-Second Session Baylor University was founded in the stormy days of the Republic of Texas, after the Fall of the Alamo and before the annexation of the Republic of Texas to the United States. While the chaos of a bloody revolution reigned over nine-tenths of her territory, while there was not a railroad nor a telegraph line, our Baptist father's, few, poor and widely scattered, laid the founda tion of this great institution. In 1842, six years after the battle of San Jacinto, the Union Association, in session on Clear Creek, Fayette county, resolved to found a great Baptist University. Among the leading spirits in that enterprise were Rev. Wm. M. Tryon, a native 'of New York; Rev. Jas. Huckins, a native of New Hampshire, and 'the Hon. R. E. B. Baylor, a native of'kentucky, eminent as a United States Congressman, a learned jurist and a Baptist preacher. These illustrious men, with their co-laborers, formed a Texas Baptist Educational Society, in order to develop and concentrate the best talent of the infant Republic on the contemplated Uni versity. In 1845 this society procured the charter and located the institution at Independence, Washington county, then near the center of population and a village noted for beautiful scenery, fertile soil and highly cultured people. Excerpt from Catalogue of the Officers and Students of Baylor University at Vasco, Texas, 1890-91 Baylor University was chartered by the Republic of Texas on the lgth of February, 1845. It was located by the Texas Baptist Educational Society at Independence, Wash ington county, then on the greatest thoroughfare of Texas, and near the centre of population. For many years it was the great educational centre of Texas. Its trustees were prudent and liberal men and did all in their power in select ing competent teachers and providing buildings. But by a fatal blunder of the citizens, the towns of Washington and Independence were left off the railroads and became inac cessible. By the entire change of the old system of labor and the influx into Southern Texas of foreigners-the char 'acter of the population was changed. Dr. Burleson and the faculty foreseeing this removed to Waco and inaugur ated Waco University in 1861. The patronage of the University at Independence was diminished from 250 stud ents in 1861, to 32 in 1886, under direction of Dr. Andrews, a young and vigorous man.
