Our prototypographer Caxton and several of his successors learned their trade abroad, and, indeed, many of the foremost printers and publishers settled in this country in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries were of foreign extraction. In many cases, as a matter of necessity, books in English (usually those prohibited for reasons connected with religious controversy) or service books intended for the English market, were printed by foreigners who had never Set foot in these isles, and apart from their interest as regards our language, have been included to Show their typographical influence on English printing.
