Catalogue of the 'Germanic' Antiquities from the Klemm Collection in the British Museum
Author: Grażyna Orlińska
Publisher: British Museum Publications Limited
ISBN: 9780714123189
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 311
Book Description
Gustav Friedrich Klemm (1802-67) was an avid scholar and collector of antiquities, based for most of his life in Dresden. In 1868 A.W. Franks acquired a major part of his collection for the British Museum. Most of this collection has never before been adequately published and until now has remained to all intents and purposes unknown: this catalogue and its illustrations therefore provide an immensely valuable resource. The catalogue presents material chiefly from the territory of the old German Confederation, in particular from the area which falls within the modern state of Poland. It ranges from the Neolithic to the post-medieval period, and includes some already famous items such as the important Bronze Age hoards from Biecz and Neunheilingen. In addition to the catalogue proper, the cultural and historical context of the collection is explored, together with a wealth of archival and biographical information; there are new scientific analyses of a number of items, and commentaries on provenance and chronology. The book also contains detailed indexes and a glossary.

Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of Antiquities in the National Museum of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland In pleading with the Scottish public for the augmentation and enrich ment of our Museum by donations of all kinds, however slight and trivial they may seem to the Donors, we plead for what is not any longer the property of this Society, but what is now the property of the Nation. The Museum has been gifted over by the Society of Antiquaries to the Government. It now belongs, not to us, but to Scotland; and we unhesitat/ingly call upon every true-hearted Scotsman to contribute, whenever it is in his power, to the extension of this Museum, as the best record and collection of the ancient Archaeological and Historical Memorials of our Native Land.
