Excerpt from General Catalogue: 1908-1909 The hours scheduled in the different programs are credit hours based on the average amount of time required. For preparation of recitations. One hour of recitation is regarded as the equivalent of two hours of laboratory work. The minimum number of credit hours which a student must carry, except in his Senior year is sixteen, the maximum number which he may ordinarily carry is twenty. Students who wish to take more work than is indicated by the maximum requirements must apply by formal petition' to the Faculty for the requisite permission. During the early years of the institution. The only high schools in the state were located in two or three of the larger cities, and it 'was necessary for the University to offer academic courses in order that students graduating from the schools in smaller towns might continue their work by coming directly to the University. AS the high school system of the state developed, it became pos sible to discontinue the, first year of the academy course; a little later the second year was dropped; and finally in 1904 the academy was entirely abolished. Excerpt from The Normal School Bulletin; July 1908, Vol. 2: Southern Illinois State Normal University, Carbondale; Catalog Number; Announcements for 1908-1909 The citizens kindly offered the use of rooms in some of the business blocks, which the trustees accepted and the school went on with regu lar recitation work, with an actual loss of less than two days. In the meantime, a plan was proposed for a temporary school building, and in less than sixty days a building was completed containing fourteen rooms, and the Normal School began its wonted duties in this, its temporary home. The General Assembly, by an act approved June 27, 1885, appropri ated to replace the first building, then lying in ruins. The foundation and stone walls of the first story were utilized, thus saving from twelve to fifteen thousand dollars. The present building, which is the main building of the entire plant, is a magnificent structure, in many respects superior to the one destroyed by fire. It was dedicated Thursday, February 24, 1887, and occupied by the school with much rejoicing on the following Monday.
