They may include writs, affidavits, depositions, subpoenas, verdicts, pleas, motions, warrants, bonds, bills of costs, witness certificates, transcripts, and documents relating to appeals, such as bills of exceptions. There may also be supporting documents such as deeds, promissory notes, statements and inventories. Case files are arranged in docket order by court term. Prior to 1895, a case which continued over several court terms was assigned a different docket number for each term, but should be filed under the docket number assigned for the term in which the case ended. After 1895 each case kept the same case number from term to term. In a given court term, case files may be divided into cases which reached a judgment or verdict, and cases which ended before judgment. Judgments in docket order are followed by discontinuances in docket order. If the court clerk did not separate the two types of cases there will be one docket sequence of case files for that term. Miscellaneous files include court administration documents such as jail reports, jury venires, vouchers for costs from court officials or witnesses, financial accounts, and bar admission recommendations. There may also be inquests, and case files unrelated to docketed cases. Chancery Court case files predating Mar. 1840 are included with Supreme Court case files, since Chancery Court was held by the Supreme Court during this period.

Most documents are related to real estate foreclosures, and include a bill of foreclosure, a master's report that calculates the amount owed on the mortgage, and a decree of foreclosure if the plaintiff wins the case. Supporting documents often include mortgages, deeds, promissory notes and receipts. Subpoenas, affidavits, depositions, motions, pleas, bills of costs, and testimony transcripts may also be included. Cases involving requests for injunctions include a bill of complaint and the defendant's answer to the bill. There may also be findings of fact and temporary or permanent injunctions. A third category of chancery case files includes documents related to dissolving business partnerships and corporations and placing businesses in receivership. Chancery case files are arranged in docket order for each court term. Until 1895 a case which continued over several court terms was assigned a different docket number for each term, but should be filed under the docket number assigned for the term in which the case ended. The supreme court record books covering 1797 through March 1840 include chancery court record entries. A master index of judgments covers supreme court cases between 1797 and 1905 and contains both plaintiff and defendant indexes, alphabetically by court term. Index entries refer to record book volumes and page numbers but do not include docket numbers.

The clerk separated judgments from discontinued cases, so case files are arranged for each term with judgments in alphabetical order, followed by discontinuances in alphabetical order. Miscellaneous supreme court files include court administration documents such as financial accounts, supreme court bar admissions, and instructions to the court clerk. Chancery court case files predating September 1840, and some 1840-1843 cases, are included with supreme court case files, since chancery court was part of the supreme court during this period.

There were only a few Lamoille county supreme court cases in any given term, so despite variable docket numbers case files can be found. Miscellaneous supreme court files include court administration documents such as financial accounts, supreme court bar admissions, and instructions to the court clerk. Chancery court case files predating June 1840 are included with supreme court case files, since chancery court was part of the supreme court during this period.

Record books contain entries by the court clerk summarizing each case that ended in a judgment. Lamoille supreme court records cover the years 1840-1909, with some gaps. The recording of supreme court judgments was highly irregular. Only 1886-1909 entries are arranged consistently in chronological order by court term, in volumes exclusively limited to the supreme court. Because of the scattered nature of these records, and the lack of indexes for some volumes, the researcher must rely on the master General Index of County and Supreme Court Records to locate judgment entries for individual cases. The two master index volumes cover county court cases between 1836 and 1947, but post-1900 supreme court entries are incomplete. Index entries are arranged alphabetically by plaintiff for each court term, and include record book volumes, page numbers, case beginning and ending dates, and docket numbers. The indexes also include entries on discontinued cases, which are not included in the record books, but which may have case files. In addition to the two index volumes arranged by plaintiff, there is a set of index cards recording 1836-1968 county and supreme court cases by defendant. The cards are arranged alphabetically, but within each letter there is no alphabetical or chronological order of cases.
