Case files include all of the documents generated during the process of a chancery court trial, and may be extensive, minimal or nonexistent for any given case. Most documents are related to real estate foreclosures, and include a bill of foreclosure, a master's report that calculates the amount owed on the mortgage, and a decree of foreclosure if the plaintiff wins the case. Supporting documents often include mortgages, deeds, promissory notes and receipts. Subpoenas, affidavits, depositions, motions, pleas, bills of costs, and testimony transcripts may also be included. In a given court term, case files may be divided into cases which reached a judgment or verdict, and cases which ended before judgment. Judgments in docket order are followed by discontinuances in docket order. If the court clerk did not separate the two types of cases there will be one docket sequence of case files for that term. Miscellaneous files include court administration documents such as jail reports, jury venires, vouchers for costs from court officials or witnesses, financial accounts, and bar admission recommendations. There may also be inquests, and case files unrelated to docketed cases. Chancery Court case files predating Mar. 1840 are included with Supreme Court case files, since Chancery Court was held by the Supreme Court during this period.

Prior to Sept. 1840, chancery court was held by the supreme court during its Franklin County sessions, so the chancery docket is included in supreme court docket books (see Series SUPR-FR-001). After Sept. 1840, chancery court was held as part of county court sessions, and its docket was recorded in a separate section of the county court docket for each term (see Series FRCC-001). Note that even after chancery cases were transferred to county court in 1840, the supreme court continued to hear some chancery cases up to 1843.

The series consists of court dockets kept by the court clerk. Dockets are court calendars which record all cases in order for each court term, assigning a unique number to each case. Docket entries include plaintiff and defendant, attorneys and a brief summary of action taking place that court term. Docket entries may also include court costs for a case. All but the first docket book of the series are indexed by plaintiff. Prior to 1840 the chancery court was held by the supreme court during its Orleans County sessions, so the chancery docket is included in the supreme court dockets for those years (see Series SUPR-OR-001). Beginning in 1880, chancery court was held as part of county court sessions, and its docket was recorded in a separate section of the county court docket for each term (see Series ORCC-001).
