The Big Influence of Small Things

The Big Influence of Small Things PDF Author: Brett Blair
Publisher: CSS Publishing
ISBN: 0788019597
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
Anyone who has done children's sermons will sooner or later hear from someone that "I learn more from the children's sermon than I do from the real sermon." And indeed, the truths of scripture are so simple that even a child can understand them. So it's no accident that children's sermons have become a central part of the worship service in many churches. Brett Blair and Tim Carpenter offer a year's worth of object lessons that engage children and impart profound lessons for all ages. Two sermons are provided for each Sunday in Cycle A of the Revised Common Lectionary, one based on the Second Lesson and one based on the Gospel. The messages are structured in two parts: the "lesson" uses an object to draw out active responses from children, then the "application" connects that object to the assigned scripture reading. Each message includes a clear statement of its exegetical aim. Bright, innovative, perceptive, creative, grace-filled... Brett Blair and Tim Carpenter are all of those and much, much more, and that is reflected beautifully in their new book The Big Influence Of Small Things. James W. Moore Pastor, St. Luke's United Methodist Church Houston, Texas Brett Blair is the pastor of Scenic Hills United Methodist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. He holds the M.Div. degree from Yale University Divinity School and is a cum laude graduate of Oral Roberts University with B.A. and M.A. degrees in New Testament Literature. Tim Carpenter is the pastor of First United Methodist Church in Bolivar, Tennessee. He is a magna cum laude graduate from Memphis Theological Seminary with a M.Div. degree, and holds the B.A. degree in Political Science from the University of Florida.

From My Heart to Yours

From My Heart to Yours PDF Author: Randall Carpenter
Publisher: Page Publishing Inc
ISBN: 1646288483
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 433

Book Description
From My Heart to Yours is a book of writings and inspirations that have helped form a bond between myself and my readers. It has allowed me to open my heart and give to my readers words of hope and moments of reflection. The relationships I have developed have been forged through honesty, humility, and commitment. In this age of technology, it has become possible to feel close to others yet be miles apart. It has allowed us to share our thoughts and feelings openly and create a strong sense of belonging with people we have never met. Though this technology is often abused and misused for personal reasons, when it is used to share love, concerns, and hopes of inspiration, it bridges the miles between people. I have tried for the last several years to share my thoughts and fulfill a promise I made to God after my open-heart surgery. This experience has added so much to my life. The relationships I have created, the friendships I have renewed, and the special bonds I have forged all mean so much to me. If you have ever read, liked, loved, or shared anything important in your life, this book will please you greatly. After you read From My Heart to Yours, our hearts will come to know each other very well. From My Heart to Yours is a book you will enjoy if your heart is open, your life is not perfect, and you still have hope for this world. My mission is not to educate you but inspire you to look beyond the surface of life and be motivated to never give up.

Revive Us Again

Revive Us Again PDF Author: Joel A. Carpenter
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 0195129075
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 360

Book Description
Skillfully blending painstaking research, telling anecdotes, and astute analysis, Carpenter - a scholar who has spent twenty years studying American evangelicalism reveals that, contrary to the popular opinion of the day, fundamentalism was alive and well in America in the late 1920s, and used its isolation over the next two decades to build new strength from within. The book describes how fundamentalists developed a pervasive network of organizations outside of the church setting and quietly strengthened the movement by creating their own schools and oragnizations, may of which are prominent today, including Fuller Theological Seminary and the publishing and radio enterprises of the Moody Bible Institute. Fundamentalists also used youth movements, missionary work and, perhaps most significantly, the burgeoning mass media industry to spread their message, especially through the powerful new medium of radio. Indeed, starting locally and growing to national broadcasts, evangelical preachers reached millions of listeners over the airwaves, in much the same way evangelists preach through television today. All this activity received no publicity outside of fundamentalist channels until Billy Graham burst on the scene in 1949. Carpenter vividly recounts how the charismatic preacher began packing stadiums with tens of thousands of listeners daily, drawing fundamentalism firmly back into the American consciousness after twenty years of public indifference. Alongside this vibrant history, Carpenter also offers many insights into fundamentalism during this period, and he describes many of the heated internal debates over issues of scholarship, separatism, and the role of women in leadership. Perhaps most important, he shows that the movement has never been stagnant or purely reactionary. It is based on an evolving ideology subject to debate, and dissension: a theology that adapts to changing times.
