Citizen Carl

Citizen Carl PDF Author: Jack McElroy
Publisher: University of New Mexico Press
ISBN: 0826365779
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
Educator, lawyer, editor, inventor, entrepreneur, and civic booster, Carl Magee helped shape New Mexico and Oklahoma in the years after gaining statehood, garnering fame along the way. Jack McElroy's fascinating biography of "Citizen Carl" tells the story of a man whose exploits were as diverse and complex as the American Southwest he loved. Magee purchased the Albuquerque Journal from the syndicate responsible for reelecting Senator Albert Bacon Fall, soon to become secretary of the Interior. Magee battled the Republican machine in New Mexico, a fight that sent Fall to prison in the Teapot Dome scandal and saw Magee repeatedly tried on charges of criminal libel, contempt of court, and even manslaughter. Forced to sell the Journal, he then started the newspaper that would become the Albuquerque Tribune. Magee's fame prompted Scripps-Howard to buy the Tribune, retaining him as editor and adopting his motto: "Give Light and the People Will Find Their Own Way." The company later transferred Magee to its struggling paper in Oklahoma City. There he solved the city's downtown parking problem by inventing the parking meter. Now mostly forgotten, Magee's legacy lives on, and many of the issues he confronted--press freedom, gun violence, public corruption, and demagoguery--remain relevant today.

Every parent’s worst fear has become her reality... SOME LIES It only takes a minute for Amy McMurray to run from her car to the cash machine. ARE TOO CLOSE To everyone who meets him, Carl Jorgenson seems an exemplary single father. His son, Sam, is bright, considerate, and devoted to his dad. Only Carl knows about Sam’s real identity and about his own unthinkable crime. TO BE SEEN One careless slip, one chance meeting is all it will take for the devastating truth to be revealed. Because when someone has risked everything to create a family, how far will they go to protect it? “A fast-paced, powerful novel.” --Seattle Post Intelligencer

Joie De Vivre

Joie De Vivre PDF Author: LeRoy Anderson
Publisher: Page Publishing Inc
ISBN: 1682136566
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 400

Book Description
Here is the chronicle of the Anderson family, Post Bellum (Civil War) Scandinavian settlers to America. They were the author’s grandparents and triggered this interesting story of the three following generations over a span of 150 years. The story is compelling, forthright and, indeed quite readable and witty. Grandpa Olander leads the parade of memorable family. His seven offspring included Navy Chaplain, Captain Paul, an exuberant fellow who charted new paths around the world aboard the SS Boise during WW II and emulated St Paul in his post-war missionary work in Greece and Turkey. Author Anderson narrates an unusual family history based on a varied community banking career laced with many collateral and cultural interests in music, travel, church, sailing, camping and gardening. Their multi -9 home- residency to accommodate the author’s career provided lots of color for the many vignettes of their personal lives. Then there are those wonderful three children and five ‘above average’ grandchildren who play an integral role in the family and world. The author’s wife, Claire, is a pleasant and comely – but quiet – supporter of all that activity from her first unusual introduction that led, ultimately, to the altar and many years of marital bliss. That saintly partner introduced the author, nee husband, to quite interesting characters who garnish this story in spades. Those ‘walk-ons’ provide a compelling, and often, humorous backdrop to the ‘larger picture’. Joie de vivre abounds with incredible and diverse photos that follow each chapter. Their composition and captions are well thought out and interesting. Thus, the whole work is a delightful journey of two people in love – hubby Roy and dearest partner, Claire – for over 60 years and still counting.
