Book Description
Global youth unemployment is a significant cause of poverty, resulting in the persistent marginalization of populations. Education and career counseling professionals and professionals in policy, research, and practice concur that the consequences of global youth unemployment are dire. But leaders in these domains have not yet come to an agreement on the best ways to face this global challenge. Our analysis of interdisciplinary literature on global youth unemployment is a first step in identifying and formalizing best practices for culturally appropriate career and workforce development worldwide. This research will support education and career counseling professionals in developing appropriate career and psychosocial support interventions, establishing empirical intervention efficacy and other program evaluation protocols, and creating a capacity-building infrastructure for knowledge-sharing across policy, research, and practitioner stakeholder groups. We also include a proposal for next steps to establish rigorous empirical support for these future initiatives.

Builder's Apprentice
Author: Andrew J. Hoffman
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781932399240
Category : Apprentices
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
In 1986, Andy Hoffman quit an engineering job, declined acceptances for graduate school at Harvard and Berkeley and accepted a carpenter's job in Nantucket. Unbeknownst to him, he had entered the world of high-end custom building. Within four years, he was supervising the construction of a 29,000 square-foot mansion on a 180-acre estate in Fairfield County Connecticut. This is a book about his personal and professional growth along that journey, from apprentice to builder through the tutelage of a seasoned and hard-nosed builder. It describes how uniquely high-end homes are built for select clients, a glimpse into the lives of the blue-collar workers, architects, engineers and clients that come together to make these projects a reality. At its core, this is a coming-of-age story, a celebration of the pursuit of creative impulses and a story about defying the "rules" and finding a personal calling in life.

Dish
Author: Barbara Moses
Publisher: McClelland & Stewart
ISBN: 1551994194
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
Women at Mid-life Tell the Truth about What Really Matters in Work, Relationships, and the Rest of Life From the bestselling author of What Next? comes a deliciously frank and inspiring look at contemporary women and the life choices they make. “I am feverish with all the possibilities,” says one woman, of her life now. “I lost myself, my sense of being because I had to conform to an alpha male world. I would come out of meetings sick to my stomach, not because of what had happened in the meeting but because of what had happened to me,” says another of her life in a corporate organization. So just what does this generation of women, the first to “have it all,” have to say for themselves today? Lots, it turns out. Rueful, funny, bitchy, wise, women at mid-life are tired of trying to please and continually biting their tongues. They have worked, married, had children, divorced, chosen to stay home, and learned lots of life’s lessons — and they are more than happy to dish it all out for us. Through the skilful lens of renowned life coach Dr. Barbara Moses, the voices of over one thousand women are focused on the issues surrounding career, family, love and sex, friendship, and society. Through them, we see a brilliant snapshot of an entire generation, one that first tackled the glass ceiling and fought for equality at home and at work. We hear what they think of their lives now, of the choices they have made, what has made them happy, and what they would change for the second half of their lives. In Moses’s capable hands, these voices become welcome advice from a host of friends, a road map for future choices. Dish is addictively readable and full of wisdom, and it will change the face of self-help. A sample of the voices in Dish: “My boss, the VP of HR, said, ‘We really need to promote work-life balance in the company. Let’s have a meeting Monday morning at seven-thirty to discuss it.’” “I’m proud of myself for ending the marriage . . . asserting my right to feel good about my life and being strong enough to do it.” “I practise Marxist (Groucho) monogamy. I wouldn’t have an affair with anyone who would have an affair with me.”
