Book Description
This report presents a cost analysis of Carbon Fiber production from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber. In this process, PAN fiber is first stabilized. The stabilized PAN passes then through carbonization, surface treatment and sizing, before being winded. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): (1) "Fibers, 5. Synthetic Inorganic", Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 7th edition (2) US Patent 8137810, issued to Toray in 2012; Keywords: Polyacrylonitrile, carbon fiber, acrylic fiber, PAN

Book Description
This report presents a cost analysis of Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) Precursor production. In this process, acrylonitrile is polymerized with methyl acrylate comonomer via aqueous dispersion polymerization and the polymer formed is subsequently converted to fiber through wet spinning. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): (1) "Acrylic Fibers," Encyclopedia of Polymer Science and Technology (2) Morgan, P., Carbon Fibers and Their Composites, 2005 Keywords: Polyacrylonitrile, Carbon Fiber, Acrylic Fiber, Suspension Polymerization, Acrylonitrile, Wet Spinning

The stabilized PAN passes then through carbonization, surface treatment and sizing, before being winded. This report examines one-time costs associated with the construction of a United States-based plant and the continuing costs associated with the daily operation of such a plant. More specifically, it discusses: * Capital Investment, broken down by: - Total fixed capital required, divided in production unit (ISBL); infrastructure (OSBL) and contingency - Alternative perspective on the total fixed capital, divided in direct costs, indirect costs and contingency - Working capital and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up * Production cost, broken down by: - Manufacturing variable costs (raw materials, utilities) - Manufacturing fixed costs (maintenance costs, operating charges, plant overhead, local taxes and insurance) - Depreciation and corporate overhead costs * Raw materials consumption, products generation and labor requirements * Process block flow diagram and description of industrial site installations (production unit and infrastructure) Keywords: Polyacrylonitrile, carbon fiber, acrylic fiber, PAN

Carbon Fibers and Their Composite Materials

Carbon Fibers and Their Composite Materials PDF Author: Luke Henderson
Publisher: MDPI
ISBN: 3039211021
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 186

Book Description
Carbon fiber is an oft-referenced material that serves as a means to remove mass from large transport infrastructure. Carbon fiber composites, typically plastics reinforced with the carbon fibers, are key materials in the 21st century and have already had a significant impact on reducing CO2 emissions. Though, as with any composite material, the interface where each component meets, in this case the fiber and plastic, is critical to the overall performance. This text summarizes recent efforts to manipulate and optimize the interfacial interaction between these dissimilar materials to improve overall performance.

The Virtual Crack Closure Technique: History, Approach and Applications

The Virtual Crack Closure Technique: History, Approach and Applications PDF Author: Ronald Krueger
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 66

Book Description
An overview of the virtual crack closure technique is presented. The approach used is discussed, the history summarized, and insight into its applications provided. Equations for two-dimensional quadrilateral elements with linear and quadratic shape functions are given. Formula for applying the technique in conjuction with three-dimensional solid elements as well as plate/shell elements are also provided. Necessary modifications for the use of the method with geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis and corrections required for elements at the crack tip with different lengths and widths are discussed. The problems associated with cracks or delaminations propagating between different materials are mentioned briefly, as well as a strategy to minimize these problems. Due to an increased interest in using a fracture mechanics based approach to assess the damage tolerance of composite structures in the design phase and during certification, the engineering problems selected as examples and given as references focus on the application of the technique to components made of composite materials.
