Freedom in the World 2010

Freedom in the World 2010 PDF Author: Freedom House
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers
ISBN: 9781442204942
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Freedom in the World, the Freedom House flagship survey whose findings have been published annually since 1972, is the standard-setting comparative assessment of global political rights and civil liberties. The survey ratings and narrative reports on 193 countries and a group of select territories are used by policy makers, the media, international corporations, and civic activists and human rights defenders to monitor trends in democracy and track improvements and setbacks in freedom worldwide. Press accounts of the survey findings appear in hundreds of influential newspapers in the United States and abroad and form the basis of numerous radio and television reports. The Freedom in the World political rights and civil liberties ratings are determined through a multi-layered process of research and evaluation by a team of regional analysts and eminent scholars. The analysts used a broad range of sources of information, including foreign and domestic news reports, academic studies, nongovernmental organizations, think tanks, individual professional contacts, and visits to the region, in conducting their research. The methodology of the survey is derived in large measure from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and these standards are applied to all countries and territories, irrespective of geographical location, ethnic or religious composition, or level of economic development.

Book Description
The work offers a detailed analysis of Anglo-Turkiccultural and linguistic relations as reflected in Englishvocabulary between the 16th and early 20th centuries.Words attested in historical English texts forwhich a Turkic language acted as an etymologicallink have not yet received a monograph treatmentand the information to be found in etymological dictionariesof English is usually hardly adequate. Theaim of the current book is to rectify this situation. The main part of the study is an etymological dictionaryof 106 lexical items related to material culturethat were adopted from Turkic or via Turkic, whetherdirectly or not. For each entry a chronological list oforthographic variants is provided, followed by a summaryof information on the word's etymology to befound in selected etymological dictionaries of English.A critical survey of these is the point of departure forthe author's own commentary. Through careful analysisof contexts in which the new lexical items cameto be used in English as well as a thorough scrutinyof their formal features the author reconstructs thetransmission routes along which the vocabulary inquestion was transmitted into English.

America and the Armenian Genocide of 1915

America and the Armenian Genocide of 1915 PDF Author: Jay Winter
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139450182
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 335

Book Description
Before Rwanda and Bosnia, and before the Holocaust, the first genocide of the twentieth century happened in Turkish Armenia in 1915, when approximately one million people were killed. This volume is an account of the American response to this atrocity. The first part sets up the framework for understanding the genocide: Sir Martin Gilbert, Vahakn Dadrian and Jay Winter provide an analytical setting for nine scholarly essays examining how Americans learned of this catastrophe and how they tried to help its victims. Knowledge and compassion, though, were not enough to stop the killings. A terrible precedent was born in 1915, one which has come to haunt the United States and other Western countries throughout the twentieth century and beyond. To read the essays in this volume is chastening: the dilemmas Americans faced when confronting evil on an unprecedented scale are not very different from the dilemmas we face today.

Law, Labour, and Empire

Law, Labour, and Empire PDF Author: Maria Fusaro
Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan
ISBN: 9781137447456
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Seafarers were the first workers to inhabit a truly international labour market, a sector of industry which, throughout the early modern period, drove European economic and imperial expansion, technological and scientific development, and cultural and material exchanges around the world. This volume adopts a comparative perspective, presenting current research about maritime labourers across three centuries, in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, to understand how seafarers contributed to legal and economic transformation within Europe and across the world. Focusing on the three related themes of legal systems, labouring conditions, and imperial power, these essays explore the dynamic and reciprocal relationship between seafarers' individual and collective agency, and the social and economic frameworks which structured their lives.

The History of Armenia

The History of Armenia PDF Author: S. Payaslian
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0230608582
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 299

Book Description
There is a great deal of interest in the history of Armenia since its renewed independence in the 1990s and the ongoing debate about the genocide - an interest that informs the strong desire of a new generation of Armenian Americans to learn more about their heritage and has led to greater solidarity in the community. By integrating themes such as war, geopolitics, and great leaders, with the less familiar cultural themes and personal stories, this book will appeal to general readers and travellers interested in the region.
