Reforming the Health Care Market

Reforming the Health Care Market PDF Author: David F. Drake
Publisher: Georgetown University Press
ISBN: 0878405682
Category : Health care reform
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
Contending that anti-competitive behavior on the part of doctors, hospitals, insurance carriers and the federal government was responsible for the dysfunctional growth of health care, the author offers historical analysis from the establishment of a market for health care services to the growth of scientific medicine, the expansion of the market, and finally to the current state of competition in an era of continuing growth. The final two chapters discuss what went wrong and why and the promise of health care reform; the latter deals specifically with the Clinton reform proposal and offers an alternative plan. The Impact of Health Care Reform on Capital Acquisition for Hospitals

Book Description
This paper addresses the impact of PPS legislation on hospital capital through an event study on the stock returns of publicly traded hospital companies. This paper focuses on the effect of PPS over time and uses qualitative data to supplement the empirical evidence. Both before and after the passage of PPS, the market reacted negatively to PPS legislation. This result supports other evidence showing that profit margins fell, borrowing costs increased as healthcare bond ratings went down and the rate of bond default was up, and capital improvements were delayed.
