Book Description
Excerpt from Cannibals Convicts: Notes of Personal Experiences in the Western Pacific For many years of my life I have travelled to and fro in the Pacific Ocean, first as a vagabond globe-trotter, and afterwards as a journalist. It has been my privilege to make acquaintance with many dusky monarchs and chieftains, from King Kalakaua, of Hawaii, to Boe Vagi, of New Guinea. In a recently-published volume of travel, the author sneers at the ignorance displayed by some of the Australian papers with regard to the Islands of the Western Pacific, and he is rather severe upon newspaper correspondents generally. On behalf of the Australian press and English journalism I join issue. In our own day, in the sphere of travel, the best work has been done by journalists. Henry M. Stanley solved the question of the Dark Continent; and ill-fated O'Donovan enlightened us about Merv. We make the history of the future; that of Our Own Time was written by a journalist. There is hardly a part of the civilised or uncivilised globe which has not been described, and its secrets laid bare, by some member of that noble army of Special Correspondents who, taking their lives in their hands, amidst battle, murder, and sudden death, provide not only news, but solid information, for the breakfast-tables of the world. I have had the good fortune to be the only journalist who has visited New Caledonia, the Isle of Pines, and the New Hebrides. If I narrate in extenso my experiences during the native insurrection in the French colony, it is that the incidents set forth show thoroughly the manner in which the authorities of France in the South Seas have treated the natives with whom they have been brought into contact; and it shows how the natives of the New Hebrides will be treated if those islands should be annexed by France. Book Description
The Unsavoury Tale of Alexander Pearce - The Convict Cannibal. Powerful and relentless, the hunger pursues you like a wild beast without respite. You can resist it for hours, even days, but it eventually overwhelms your reason with its desperate desire to be satisfied. Eat or be eaten ... that was the terrible choice facing the eight convict bolters from Macquarie Harbour, Australia's most remote and brutal penal colony. Lost and starving after a week in a wilderness no white man had ever crossed, order breaks down when one finally gives voice to their secret thoughts, 'I could eat a piece of a man.' Soon betrayal, lies and murder reign and the convicts start to fear each other more than the spears of the Aborigines. Who'll be served next? Will any of them reach the settled areas alive? Bloodlust is the story of this terrible journey as seen through the eyes of Irishman Alexander Pearce, who discovers what happens when men are pushed past their limits and what lies in the dark shadows beyond. Nick Bleszynski, author of the bestselling Shoot Straight You Bastards! and You'll Never Take Me Alive, mixes archive, history and the power of imagination to bring Australia's darkest and most controversial legend to life.

Book Description
As Tom Tin nears Australia, where he’s to serve a lengthy sentence for a murder he didn’t commit, he and his fellow convict, Midgely, plot their escape. No matter that the ship carrying them and the other juvenile criminals is captained by Tom’s father. Tom knows his father can’t help him clear his name and regain his freedom–not as long as Mr. Goodfellow, a man who wants the ruin of the Tin family, wields power back in London. So Tom and Midgely decide to go overboard! So do other boys who seize their chance at liberty–boys who aren’t so innocent, and who have it in for Tom. To make things worse, the islands in the Pacific look inviting, but Tom remembers his father’s warnings: headhunters and cannibals lurk there! The boys go anyway. And as conflict among them mounts, as they encounter the very dangers Captain Tin spoke of, Tom must fight to keep himself and Midgely alive.
