Pages : 406

Book Description
The pace of discovery, within the EU, of scientific aspects of cancer research and of developments in the clinical field is so rapid that it is sometimes difficult to keep abreast. This brief overview attempts to highlight some of the advances in the field, as part of BIOMED programme funded research and specific results due to the co-operative spirit established by the scientific community. It is particularly worth noting the financial investment of 35 million ECU in the current programme, has d as a catalyst in attracting a large number of Member States funded research in pooling their collective knowledge base.

Drug Metabolism

Drug Metabolism PDF Author: N. J. Gooderham
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 9789051993783
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 230

Book Description
With its roots in the last century and currently exploiting the technology of today, the science of drug metabolism has made significant contributions to our understanding of chemico-biological interactions. This book reviews past successes and failures within the science and attempts to predict new directions. Each of the chapters of this book deals with an aspect of xenobiotic metabolism which has featured prominently in the development of the discipline. The volume is testimony to the breadth and depth of research into xenobiotic metabolism and covers the chemistry and enzymology of xenobiotic metabolism, enzyme modeling and structure activity relationships, pharmacokinetics, the use of recombinant gene technology, site directed mutagenesis, transgenic and gene knockout models, new analytical techniques including capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry, accelerator mass spectrometry, high throughput analysis toxicological assessment, pharmacogenetics, drug development and therapeutics. With new chemical entities constantly emerging and requiring evaluation, the concepts and techniques developed in this book will help focus future lines of investigation and help set priorities in the next millennium.

The Venous System in Health and Disease

The Influence of Economic Evaluation Studies on Health Care Decision-making

The Influence of Economic Evaluation Studies on Health Care Decision-making PDF Author: J. Matthias Schulenburg
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 9781586030292
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
Despite the growing activity in the field of health economics very little is known about the influence of economic evaluation studies on health-care decision-making in the EU member states. Several investigations about the impact of health economic studies on decision-making have been done, but most of them did not involve decision-makers themselves. In this work the results of the EUROMET survey are reported and discussed. To allow an international perspective, different types of decision-makers in nine European countries were surveyed. Besides the extent of knowledge about economic evaluation, the actual and potential use of study results as well as barriers and incentives for the use of economic evaluation studies had been investigated.

The Eurocleft Project 1996-2000

The Eurocleft Project 1996-2000 PDF Author: Bill Shaw
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 9781586030582
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 324

Book Description
The European Register of Cleft Lip and Palate Services will be produced as a result of the concerted action project: Standards of Care for Cleft Lip and Palate in Europe: EUROCLEFT funded by the European Commision under its BIOMED II and INCO COPERNICUS programmes. The project, aimed at developing a network of cleft care teams across Europe, ran for three years between 1996 and 1999 and aimed broadly to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of care for European children with clefts of the lip and/or palate. Clefts of the lip and/or palate are birth defects affecting 1:500 live births. Successful rehabilitation requires a complex multidisciplinary mix of services.

Mechanobiology

Mechanobiology PDF Author: J. F. Stoltz
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 9781586030513
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
Until the '90s, research in biomechanics and biorheology mainly focused on tissues and cell priorities, so as to identify the bioclinical problems linked to the rheology properties of cells and tissues or to develop substitutes. Advances in molecular biology and new knowledge in cellular biology over the last ten years have given access to a more physiological approach to the effects of stress on cells and tissues.

A Molecular Biology Approach to Parkinson's Disease

A Molecular Biology Approach to Parkinson's Disease PDF Author: Peter Jenner
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 9789051994230
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 110

Book Description
Parkinson's disease is the only neurodegenerative disorder for which the major pathological and biochemical defects have been identified. But why dopamine-containing cells in the substantia nigra die in Parkinson's disease remains a mystery. Similarly, the changes in basal ganglia output pathways which lead to the onset of motor disability and the occurrence of L-DOPA induced dyskinesia remain unclear. While treatment for the symptoms of Parkinson's disease is available, nothing can presently be done to stop the disease progressing. A molecular approach to Parkinson's disease is unraveling genetic factors responsible for inducing the onset of nigral cell degeneration or for making individuals susceptible to other neutotoxic factors. Similarly, key findings in the area of mitochondrial dysfunction are now providing a new insight into the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease. The application of molecular biochemistry to cell susceptibility and to the mechanisms of neuronal adapation occuring in basal ganglia are providing new clues to why motor abnormalities occur. Genetic engineering of cell lines, fibroblasts and viral vectors are providing means of replenishing dopamine production and introducing growth factors into the damaged basal ganglia. This book considers all these approaches and their implications for the future treatment of Parkinson's disease.

Musculoskeletal Disorders in Health-related Occupations

Musculoskeletal Disorders in Health-related Occupations PDF Author: Thomas Reilly
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 9781586032081
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 198

Book Description
Annotation The Biomed IV project researched musculoskeletal disorders in health- related occupations. This work, based on the project, provides insight on the problems of musculoskeletal disorders and the means of their investigation. After a presentation of background to the project, methodologies and applications are described, and a set of reviews is provided, in particular for the research techniques used by the various investigators. These include the application of precision stadiometry, electromyography, epidemiology, the Delphi method, and body composition analysis. Individual studies illustrate how hospital specialisms fit into the broader ergonomics context. Reilly is affiliated with the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University, UK. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).
