Cancer statistics are useful for identifying the magnitude of cancer problems in populations and to evaluate the effects of cancer control measures. Analyses of cancer statistics often provide etiological clues and suggest methods for countermeasures for cancer prevention. This book presents detailed cancer mortality statistics and features many illustrations designed to help researchers better understand trends in cancer statistics. It gives cancer mortality data in Japan through 1990 and cancer incidence data from 1987-1989.

Cancer Mapping

Cancer Mapping PDF Author: Peter Boyle
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642836518
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 295

Book Description
The preceding decade has seen the production of many cancer at lases. As with other techniques of descriptive epidemiology, these atlases have proved valuable in identifying areas for further re sear~h employing the methods of analytical epidemiology. How ever, the various cancer atlases produceq to date have failed to pro vide a common format of presentation, which has limited their comparability and frustrated in a large measure any attempt to compare risks across national boundaries, boundaries which in terms of environmental exposures may have little meaning. In this volume, many features of cancer atlases are presented and there are discussions on the areas where moves towards standardization could greatly increase the utility of the finished product. In contrast to topographic maps, i. e., representations of natural and man-made features on the surface of the earth, thematic maps concentrate on displaying the geographical occurrence and varia tion of a single phenomenon - the "theme" of the map. The link between thematic and base mapping is rather strong as the themat ic information to be depicted is of greater value if displayed on an accurate base map. Further, the thematic map generally uses statis tical data which are frequently related to internal administrative boundaries for enumeration. The major reason for constructing a thematic map is to discover the spatial structure of the theme of the map and to then relate the structure to some aspects of the under lying environment.

Racial and Ethnic Differences in Disease

Racial and Ethnic Differences in Disease PDF Author: Anthony P. Polednak
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 9780195059700
Category : Ethnic groups
Languages : en
Pages : 392

Book Description
This book presents a comprehensive account of differences in the frequencies of various diseases among a wide range of racial and ethnic groups throughout the world today. It provides epidemiologists, physicians, sociologists, and anthropologists with a methodological framework for understanding the concepts of race and ethnic group, the use of these concepts in epidemiology, and the interpretation of epidemiologic studies of disease. The volume includes information on the physical anthropology of major racial/ethnic groups, as well as chapters on genetic diseases, infectious and parasitic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and many other chronic disorders. Each chapter provides descriptive information on the relative frequencies of diseases and the methods used in studies, as well as a systematic discussion of the interpretation of the racial and ethnic differences described, which may arise from such factors as errors in measurement or socioeconomic differences between groups. Genetic and biological factors are also considered, and many individual studies are summarized and critically appraised. The text is ideal for graduates and undergraduates alike, while the authors non-technical approach is easily accessible to general readers with an interest in the subject.

Cancer Incidence in Five Continents

Cancer Incidence in Five Continents PDF Author: D. M. Parkin
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789283221432
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 1294

Book Description
The aim of the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents series is to present data on cancer incidence from reliable registries in a standardized way so that comparisons between geographical areas and ethnic groups may be made with confidence. The efforts to build up cancer registration in areas of the world for which very little information on cancer occurrence is available are bearing fruit, and some of the results appear in this volume. Of particular note is the reappearance of Uganda, Kyadondo County - a registry for which data were published in Volume I but which was not able to contribute data until the period covered by the present volume. There are contributions from five new registries in Asia (including, for the first time, data from Korea and Vietnam) and from four in South America (presenting data from Argentina and Uruguay for the first time). An innovation in Volume VII is the analysis of histological sub-types for selected sites using data which have been checked for validity.
