Selenium

Selenium PDF Author: Edgar Drake
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 0595180663
Category : Cooking
Languages : en
Pages : 174

Book Description
In this timely, fact-intensive book, the author interprets 30 years of peer-reviewed scientific and medical research, including five human clinical trials in the United States and China, which convincingly demonstrate that taking a daily supplement of the essential mineral selenium, with no other changes in lifestyle, can reduce total cancer incidence in at-risk human populations by approximately 37%. With documentation from the literature, the author establishes that selenium is non-uniformly distributed in the United States, has powerful anticancer properties, naturally occurs in several chemical forms that produce different metabolic products differing in their cancer-preventive potency, causes premalignant and malignant cells to commit suicide, is affected by supplements of other nutrients, and stimulates the immune system. The book also details all the information needed for safe and effective dietary selenium supplementation, including important facts about commercial supplements. Many multivitamin and antioxidant formulas either contain nutrients that can abolish the cancer-preventive effectiveness of selenium, or they contain too little selenium to impact materially anyone’s cancer risk. These and other relevant facts are essential to making an informed choice among the intimidating array of available products.

Health Behavior

Health Behavior PDF Author: Sonya Bahar
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1489908331
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 442

Book Description
HEALTH BEHAVIOR AS BASIC RESEARCH Health behavior is not a traditional discipline, but a newly emerging interdisciplinary field. It is still in the process of establishing its identity. Few institutional or organizational structures, i. e. , departments and programs, reflect it, and few books and journals are directed at it. The primary objective of this book is thus to identify and establish health behavior as an important area of basic research, worthy of being studied in its own right. As a basic research area, health behavior transcends commitment to a particular behavior, a specific illness or health problem, or a single set of determinants. One way of achieving this objective is to look at health behavior as an outcome of a range of personal and social determinants, rather than as a set of risk factors or as targets for intervention strategies directed at behavioral change. The book is thus organized pri marily in terms of the size of the determinants of concern, rather than in terms of specific health behaviors, or specific health problems or conditions. With the first part of the book establishing working defmitions of health behavior and health behavior research as basic frameworks, the second part moves from smaller to larger systems, informing the reader about basic research that demonstrates how health behavior is determined by personal, family, social, institutional, and cultural factors. These distinctions reflect some arbitrar iness: the family, organizations, and institutions, for example, are social units.
