Canada

Canada PDF Author: International Monetary Fund. Monetary and Capital Markets Department
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1498321119
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 85

Book Description
This Financial System Stability Assessment paper discusses that Canada has enjoyed favorable macroeconomic outcomes over the past decades, and its vibrant financial system continues to grow robustly. However, macrofinancial vulnerabilities—notably, elevated household debt and housing market imbalances—remain substantial, posing financial stability concerns. Various parts of the financial system are directly exposed to the housing market and/or linked through housing finance. The financial system would be able to manage severe macrofinancial shocks. Major deposit-taking institutions would remain resilient, but mortgage insurers would need additional capital in a severe adverse scenario. Housing finance is broadly resilient, notwithstanding some weaknesses in the small non-prime mortgage lending segment. Although banks’ overall capital buffers are adequate, additional required capital for mortgage exposures, along with measures to increase risk-based differentiation in mortgage pricing, would be desirable. This would help ensure adequate through-the cycle buffers, improve mortgage risk-pricing, and limit procyclical effects induced by housing market corrections.

Financial Vulnerability in Canada

Financial Vulnerability in Canada PDF Author: Jerry Buckland
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030925811
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 191

Book Description
This book examines financial vulnerability: a state in which a person or household cannot absorb any substantial spending or negative income shock without substantial financial and ultimately broader harm such as job loss, emotional harm, or mental illness. The focus of the book is on the experiences of low- income and modest income Canadian families – families which, by virtue of being in the lower income brackets, are particularly at risk of experiencing financial hardship. Looking at vulnerability from a conceptual and empirical lens, this book offers a framework to better understand the complex and interdependent ways in which financial vulnerability emerge and can be addressed. By locating its analysis of individual and household financial management in wider community, cultural, and economic contexts, this book seeks to offer holistic policy recommendations to reduce financial vulnerability, with implications that go beyond Canada and to other developed countries.

ISBN: 1487594410
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 252

Book Description
Broken down into five sections explaining how public budgets are developed, Canadian Public Finance presents a comprehensive account of the budget process of the federal, provincial, and territorial governments. With a specific focus on the public policy process, Geneviève Tellier walks readers through the five steps involved in the budget process including agenda-setting, formulation, adoption, implementation, and evaluation. Taking a close look at how much influence key decision-makers actually have over the budget process, Tellier highlights recent events that reveal the political, social, and economic constraints that impact budgetary decisions. Tellier uses key words and textboxes at the end of each chapter to reflect on current issues and new developments in the world of public finance, such as gender-sensitive budgets, performance-based budgeting, and fiscal transparency.

The Canadian Financial System

The Canadian Financial System PDF Author: Barbara L. Miles
Publisher: Nova Publishers
ISBN: 9781590336724
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 94

Book Description
In light of the major changes in financial regulation introduced by the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999, the significant security and operational concerns connected with the events of September 11, and the failure of Enron, the scope, structure, operations and functions of the US financial system are receiving a heightened level of attention. However, the United States is not unique in facing fundamental questions about markets and regulation. A number of other nations have instituted basic changes and overhauls in their financial system. This book provides a descriptive overview of the Canadian financial system. While the Canadian and American systems are generally similar in structure and function, there are significant differences in market and regulatory practices, and comparison may yield useful insights for oversight of the US financial system. Contents: Introduction; The Bank of Canada; Commercial Banking System; Securities Dealers and Markers; Other Financial Intermediaries; Summary of Canadian Financial Regulation; Appendix A-B; Bibliography; Index.

Bank Capital

Bank Capital PDF Author: Ouarda Merrouche
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1455254878
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 38

Book Description
Using a multi-country panel of banks, we study whether better capitalized banks experienced higher stock returns during the financial crisis. We differentiate among various types of capital ratios: the Basel risk-adjusted ratio; the leverage ratio; the Tier I and Tier II ratios; and the tangible equity ratio. We find several results: (i) before the crisis, differences in capital did not have much impact on stock returns; (ii) during the crisis, a stronger capital position was associated with better stock market performance, most markedly for larger banks; (iii) the relationship between stock returns and capital is stronger when capital is measured by the leverage ratio rather than the risk-adjusted capital ratio; (iv) higher quality forms of capital, such as Tier 1 capital and tangible common equity, were more relevant.
