Book Description
Excerpt from Canadian Citizenship a Treatise on Civil Government The design of the author in the preparation of this work is to give young people a general outline of the Canadian system of government, and to urge the importance of that moral and intellectual training which forms the basis of good citizenship. To persons who live under democratic institutions, an intelligent acquaintance with the manner in which they are governed is obviously essential. Political development is impossible unless the principles of civil government are understood. In England the educational progress of the last thirty years, together with the liberal extension of the franchise, has led to the circulation of several books of a popular character, dealing with the rights and duties of citizens In France, where national education has, perhaps, received more attention within the last fifteen years than in any other country of Europe, l'instruction civique is one of the most popular branches of study. A Treatise on the Law of Citizenship in the United States (Classic Reprint)

A Treatise on the Law of Citizenship in the United States (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Prentiss Webster
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330893463
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 368

Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on the Law of Citizenship in the United States "The distinction between citizens proper, that is, the constituent members of the political sovereignty, and subjects of that sovereignty who are not, therefore, citizens is recognized in the best authorities of the public law." This distinction is true. The further question of who are and who are not citizens has its difficulties, Accept the definition of citizenship to be the enjoyment of equal rights and privileges at home, and equal protection abroad, and consider the question from this standpoint, from which alone it should be treated, for we have no law in the United States which divides our citizens into classes or makes any difference whatever between them. We then discover the importance that the equal rights of citizens when at home should maintain when abroad, because questions as to citizenship are determined by municipal law in subordination to the law of nations. Therefore, the value of citizenship should not be underestimated. Every individual should have some central point from which he emanates and to which he returns, where he is clothed with citizenship and the consequent enjoyment of all rights and privileges which citizenship confers. The Rights and Duties of American Citizenship (Classic Reprint)

The Rights and Duties of American Citizenship (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Westel Woodbury Willoughby
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330823675
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 342

Book Description
Excerpt from The Rights and Duties of American Citizenship The purpose of the present work is to present to American youths practical information as to the rights and duties which attach to American citizenship. In the effort to do this in the clearest and most logical form, the stereotyped method of giving a running commentary upon the Constitution has been discarded. Of all political forms, the federal type is the most complex; and it is, therefore, little short of absurd to attempt, as do so many text-books on Civics, to explain to students who are without previous training the constitutional relations of our elaborate system of national, state, and local governments, without first giving to them a knowledge of the nature of political authority, the purposes for which it exists, and the general governmental means through which such purposes are attained. In the present work it is believed that this error has been avoided. The student is first given that information which is essential to an understanding of citizenship and government in general, before he is called upon to study the description of our own complex government in particular. This book is therefore divided into two parts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Citizenship of the United States (Classic Reprint)

Citizenship of the United States (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Frederick van Dyne
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780656609635
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 556

Book Description
Excerpt from Citizenship of the United States These laws, substantially the statutes enacted more than a hundred years ago when our population was less than four millions, and when it was the policy of our government to invite immigration, were ill adapted to our modern conditions, with a population of eighty mil lions and an influx of foreigners of more than a million annually. Under these laws lax and unsatisfactory methods of naturalization had grown up, opening the way to gross frauds against our citizenship, including perjury, false impersonation, and traffic in false and counterfeit certificates of citizenship. Such certificates were sometimes sold to alien criminals to secure their ad mission to the United States, and frequently to procure protection against their home governments. Cases have actually occurred where aliens have landed on our shores for the first time, having in their possession certificates entitling them to the full rights of American citizenship. Treatise on Citizenship

Treatise on Citizenship PDF Author: Alexander Porter Morse
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331051633
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 418

Book Description
Excerpt from Treatise on Citizenship: By Birth and by Naturalization, With Reference to the Law of Nations, Roman Civil Law, Law of the United State+s of America, and the Law of France; Including Provisions in the Federal Constitution, and in the Several State Constitutions, in Respect of Cit It has been observed in substance, by an author who made some impression on his age, that upon all great subjects much always remains to be said. If this observation be founded in truth, - as the writer believes it to be, - and it be conceded that the subject herein treated is within the description mentioned, it would appear to be unnecessary to make apology for offering the reader a contribution to the law and literature of citizenship. That citizenship is a great question, in the most liberal meaning of the expression, will not, it is presumed, be denied. It is also a many-sided question. The term involves the idea of rights and duties, of sacred obligations and cherished prerogatives. Its present consideration has reference to the relations between individuals, as well as to the responsibilities of a state towards its own citizens and towards the citizens of other states. It will appear in the progress of this discussion why the terms "citizen" and "citizenship" have been employed in preference to other expressions which designate national character and nationality. The plan and general scope of the work will be readily understood on reference to the full title. The division of the subject adopted seemed natural; and the comparative and historical method of investigation, which has been pursued, is at once convenient and instructive.
