Excerpt from The Greek And Latin Prize Poems Of The University Of Cambridge: From 1814 To 1837 Several reasons have induced us to admit no poems of an earlier date than 1814. From that time to the present we have endeavoured to make our collection complete, but in a few years during this period some of the prizes appear not to have been adjudged. We have also, in one or two instances, given such poems as have gained second prizes; thinking that, in general, the very fact of a second prize being °given proves the excellency of both. In our arrangement, it has been thought best to make a separate division of each particular class of poems. We ought perhaps to observe, too, that in several instances they have been revised and altered by the authors.
