I am happy to release the 2014 California Agricultural Statistics Review.Even though the 2014 crop year coincides with the third consecutiveyear of unprecedented drought, the innovation and resilience of California'sagricultural community continues to ensure the State's agriculturalabundance.Despite the tremendous challenges in 2014, the farmgate value of the state's76,400 farms and ranches was a record $54 billion. Of the $54 billion, over $21billion was attributed to California's agricultural exports.Our farmers, ranchers and nurserymen deserve special commendation for maintaining this delicatebalance of continued healthful food production in an era of drought. From fallowing land totaling a halfmillion acres to capital-intensive investment in drip irrigation and other sustainability processes, ouragricultural community is a respected partner with university experts and policy-makers who responsiblysteward California's agricultural heritage and its tremendous potential.Many of the nutritious food products so valued and necessary as part of a healthy diet are producedexclusively in California. With over 400 commodities produced commercially, no other state is poised toharness the combination of human ingenuity, productive soils, sunshine and water as we are in this greatstate. In terms of environmental stewardship, initiatives funded here demonstrate our forward-thinkingcommitment to maintaining the farm ecosystem environment for future generations.At the time of this publication, it was estimated the direct costs of the continued drought to Californiaagriculture had
