Book Description
Peak clipping is a well known method of increasing the average power output of a peak power limited voice communication transmitter. Although the clipping process introduces distortion, articulation tests have shown that clipped speech remains highly intelligible. Using idealization of vowel sounds based on the mechanism of speech production, calculations were made of the spectra resulting from clipping these speech-like signals. The results indicate a high degree of similarity between the spectra before and after clipping. The power gained by clipping at audio frequency and at narrowband was calculated and compared with previously published data. Repeaking due to component rejection was investigated for clipping at audio and narrowband. Calculations of the effect of varying the phase characteristic of the signals before clipping indicate that such variation may improve the intelligibility of clipped speech. (Author).

The Effects of Pre-emphasis, Peak Clipping, and De-emphasis on the Intelligibility of Speech in Noise

The Effects of Pre-emphasis, Peak Clipping, and De-emphasis on the Intelligibility of Speech in Noise PDF Author: Frank Loren Smith

Languages : en
Pages : 34

Book Description
The experiment reported here was designed to investigate the effects or pre-emphasis, various amounts of peak clipping, and de-emphasis on speech intelligibility under various conditions of noise before processing the speech and in the listening field. Results indicate that all of the variables, operating singly, two at a time, and three at a time produce small but significant differences in articulation scores. These differences may be summarized in answer to the four principal questions of interest for the investigation. (Author).

A Practical Handbook of Speech Coders

A Practical Handbook of Speech Coders PDF Author: Randy Goldberg
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781420036824
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
A Practical Handbook of Speech Coders offers in-depth treatment of the basics of speech coding plus the innovations to the basic methods that make the coders useful and efficient. It describes the fundamentals of auditory information processing and how they relate to speech coding, and shows readers how to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of all publicly available codes and choose the right one. It explains how to measure the quality of speech coders with objective, subjective, and perceptual measures. The book also shows engineers how to tailor existing speech coders and provides the building blocks to create new coders.
