Book Description
Several safety parameters are calculated for a large, fast, Na-cooled, oxide-fueled reactor. The Doppler coefficient is studied as regards its effect on the reactivity during a power excursion, and its dependence on the neutron spectrum, on the concentrations of U238, Pu 239, a nd Pu24°, on spatial temperature and power distributions, and on temperature. Other parameters studied include the Na temperature coefficient of reactivity, and the reactivity insertion caused by total Na loss; reactivity coefficients caused by thermal expansion of fuel and steel cladding; the excess operating reactivity; and the reactivity caused by a fuel slump. The effects of a Be reflector on neutron lifetimes are determined. The safety aspects are balanced against economic considerations. (T.F.H.).

Calculations of the Doppler Coefficient of Large Ceramic-fueled Fast Reactors
Author: M. G. Bhide

Category : Cross sections (Nuclear physics)

Pages : 50
Book Description
Calculations of the Doppler coefficient of large, ceramic-fueled fast reactors containing plutonium were made by means of the ELMOE program to provide accurate flux calculations. The temperature-dependent cross sections of P. Greebler et al., for U-238 and plutonium-239 were used. Doppler coefficients of the order of 105 intermediate temperature k/ C were obtained, in agreement with Greebler's results. Coefficients of carbide fueled reactors are about 0.7 of those of oxide-fueled reactors at the same fuel enrichment. Effective coarse-group elastic-removal cross sections for light elements are tabulated. It appears that, with tabulations of this sort as a guide, coarse-group sets of cross sections can be constructed to give adequate accuracy in calculations of Doppler coefficients without use of ELMOE.
