Human Rights as Battlefields

Human Rights as Battlefields PDF Author: Gabriel Blouin-Genest
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319917706
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 298

Book Description
This book examines human rights as political battlefields, spaces that are undergoing constant changes in which political conflicts are expressed by a translation process within networks of interactions. This translation, in turn, contributes to modifying the scope and understanding of human rights. Ultimately, these battlefields express the legitimacy encounter of different versions of human rights in contemporary political practices. The volume thus challenges both the tendency to minimize the changing nature of human rights as well as the struggles emerging from the use of human rights discourses as a legitimization tool. By shifting the focus on what stakeholders do instead of solely on the origin, nature or foundations of human rights, the authors reveal that human rights are not static objects: they are constantly transformed and, as such, affect the horizon of universal rights.

Chinese Rhetoric and Writing

Chinese Rhetoric and Writing PDF Author: Andy Kirkpatrick
Publisher: Parlor Press LLC
ISBN: 1602353034
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 217

Book Description
Andy Kirkpatrick and and Zhichang Xu offer a response to the argument that Chinese students’ academic writing in English is influenced by “culturally nuanced rhetorical baggage that is uniquely Chinese and hard to eradicate.” Noting that this argument draws from “an essentially monolingual and Anglo-centric view of writing,” they point out that the rapid growth in the use of English worldwide calls for “a radical reassessment of what English is in today’s world.” The result is a book that provides teachers of writing, and in particular those involved in the teaching of English academic writing to Chinese students, an introduction to key stages in the development of Chinese rhetoric, a wide-ranging field with a history of several thousand years. Understanding this important rhetorical tradition provides a strong foundation for assessing and responding to the writing of this growing group of students.

Reduction of Regional Disparities

Reduction of Regional Disparities PDF Author: Gabriel Carron
Publisher: Unesco Press
ISBN:
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 136

Book Description
Based on eight monographs presented and discussed at a working meeting of the International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP) in 1977, this summational report is intended to be used by educational planners for a reduction of regional disparities through school network reorganization and improvements in educational service. Part I discusses the regional approach to the problem of educational disparities with reference to countries such as Thailand and Kenya, identifying both interregional and intraregional disparities. Part II establishes criteria for measuring disparities, beginning with such commonly used indicators as quantitative expansion of the education system and efficiency of educational service, and demonstrating three different types of evaluative analysis: evolution of disparities in time; evolution of disparities at different levels of the education system; and the relation between educational, economic, and social disparities. Part II also includes a proposed classification of educational indicators for analytical purposes. While part III focuses on disparities in educational access, school progress, and scholastic achievement, part IV reviews measures currently envisaged by governments for reducing regional disparities and discusses their implications for educational planning. Human Rights from Below

Human Rights from Below PDF Author: Jim Ife
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139482378
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
In Human Rights from Below, Jim Ife shows how human rights and community development are problematic terms but powerful ideals, and that each is essential for understanding and practising the other. Ife contests that practitioners - advocates, activists, workers and volunteers - can better empower and protect communities when human rights are treated as more than just a specialist branch of law or international relations, and that human rights can be better realised when community development principles are applied. The book offers a long overdue assessment of how human rights and community development are invariably interconnected. It highlights how critical it is to understand the two as a basis for thinking about and taking action to address the serious challenges facing the world in the twenty-first century. Written both for students and for community development and human rights workers, Human Rights from Below brings together the important fields of human rights and community development, to enrich our thinking of both.
