Book Description
We study the effects of on-the-job skill accumulation on average hours worked by age and the volatility of hours over the life cycle in a calibrated general equilibrium model. Two forms of skill accumulation are considered: learning by doing and on-the-job training. In our economy with learning by doing, individuals supply more labor early in the life cycle and less as they approach retirement than they do in an economy without this feature. The impact of this feature on the volatility of hours over the life cycle depends on the value of the intertemporal elasticity of labor supply. When individuals accumulate skills by on-the-job training, there are only weak effects on both the steady-state labor supply and its volatility over the life cycle.

The Business Cycle and the Life Cycle
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Business cycles
Languages : en
Pages : 47
Book Description
"The paper documents how cyclical fluctuations in market work vary over the life cycle and then assesses the predictions of a life-cycle version of the growth model for those observations. The analysis yields a simple but striking finding. The main discrepancy between the model and that data lies in the inability of the model to account for fluctuations in hours for individuals in the first half of their life cycle. The predictions for those in the latter half of the life cycle are quite close to the data"--Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland web site.

Economic Cycles
Author: Solomos Solomou
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 9780719041518
Category : Business cycles
Languages : en
Pages : 150
Book Description
The ups and downs of booms and slumps, often referred to as business cycles, are features of all modern economies. This book considers business cycles over three epochs 1870-1913, 1919-1938 and the post-World War II period. It provides an analysis of the key macroeconomic questions relating to economic fluctuations. Why are the ups and down more volatile in some epochs than others? Why are some business cycle shocks more persistent in their effects? Is there an international business cycle? Can present business cycle features predict future patterns? What impact will institutional changes, such as EMU have on future fluctuations?

The Life Cycle Hypothesis
Author: Tony Plummer
Publisher: Harriman House Limited
ISBN: 0857196340
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 232
Book Description
The Life Cycle Hypothesis provides evidence of an ordered process behind the apparent randomness of financial asset price movements, economic fluctuations, and social trends. It shows how genuine information will have a dramatic effect on any system into which it is inserted, and will generate reactions that are essentially pre-programmed. These reactions involve the processes of advance and decline, and therefore embrace a set of specific lower-order fluctuations. Financial and economic analysts have long been familiar with the resulting phenomena, but have had difficulty providing a satisfactory explanation. The Life Cycle Hypothesis builds on the findings of Tony Plummer's previous book, The Law of Vibration, and shows that nature itself contains the answer. There is a universal blueprint that manages growth, that organises evolution, and that contends with decline. In effect, the shock of fresh information creates a new organism whose energy travels along a natural pathway between birth and death. It is this pathway that generates such widely diverse phenomena as personal mid-life crises, the swarming of innovations, recurring patterns in financial markets, and rhythmic oscillations in national economies. It is this pathway that produced the Great Depression of the 1930s, the inflation trauma of the 1970s, and the global financial crisis of 2007-08. The same pathway now suggests that there may be a major global crisis in the early years of the next decade. The Life Cycle Hypothesis has the potential to change the way that we understand the world. It will therefore have a natural appeal for investors, economists, and social scientists. It will also be of great interest to those who sense a connection between the diverse social and political upheavals that are currently impacting us, and who want to understand the forces at work.

Real Business Cycle Theory
Author: Fouad Sabry
Publisher: One Billion Knowledgeable
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 318
Book Description
What is Real Business Cycle Theory Real business-cycle theory is a class of new classical macroeconomics models in which business-cycle fluctuations are accounted for by real shocks. Unlike other leading theories of the business cycle, RBC theory sees business cycle fluctuations as the efficient response to exogenous changes in the real economic environment. That is, the level of national output necessarily maximizes expected utility, and governments should therefore concentrate on long-run structural policy changes and not intervene through discretionary fiscal or monetary policy designed to actively smooth out economic short-term fluctuations. How you will benefit (I) Insights, and validations about the following topics: Chapter 1: Real business-cycle theory Chapter 2: Keynesian economics Chapter 3: Macroeconomics Chapter 4: Recession Chapter 5: New Keynesian economics Chapter 6: Real versus nominal value (economics) Chapter 7: Business cycle Chapter 8: Aggregate demand Chapter 9: Procyclical and countercyclical variables Chapter 10: Robert Hall (economist) Chapter 11: Economic stability Chapter 12: Dynamic stochastic general equilibrium Chapter 13: Neoclassical synthesis Chapter 14: New classical macroeconomics Chapter 15: Great Moderation Chapter 16: Demand-led growth Chapter 17: Stock market cycle Chapter 18: History of macroeconomic thought Chapter 19: Welfare cost of business cycles Chapter 20: Regression analysis Chapter 21: Economic recession in Iran (II) Answering the public top questions about real business cycle theory. (III) Real world examples for the usage of real business cycle theory in many fields. Who this book is for Professionals, undergraduate and graduate students, enthusiasts, hobbyists, and those who want to go beyond basic knowledge or information for any kind of Real Business Cycle Theory.
