Hammertoes: One of these on a foot is not disqualifying but more than one should cause rejection, uuless the recruit can be operated on with success. Over-riding toes, if excessive and numerous, are apt to cause blisters in marching and are disqualifying. If in a mild degree, these will tend to improve after wearing the Army shoe. Physical Examination 8tandards, No. 3, for local boards, November, 1917, specified as causes for rejection: Club feet; large and painful bunions; over-riding or marked displacement or deformity of any of the toes. Hammertoe is cause for rejection if it is well marked Physical Examination Standards, No. 4, for local boards, February, 1918, specified: Accept all foot and ankle lesions if they do not interfere with the wearing of an ordinary shoe and with walking and with weight-bearing power; hammertoe, hallux valgus, ... are to be accepted if they come within the above requirements. Refer all doubtful and other cases to the medical advisory board. Reject no foot cases. Physical Examination Standards, No. 5, for medical advisory boards, March, 1918: Accept for general military service all registrants with lesion of the feet and toes, irrespective of present function, when, after examination it is the opinion of the medical advisory board that the lesion is remediable by treatment or operation. It will be noted that by February and March, 1918, the bars to admission on account of foot defects had been markedly lowered. A criterion in regard to the effectiveness of the earlier physical examination standards in barring from the Army those with feet too weak for service is gained by..
