There is, however, the important distinction that in a gravitational field the coefficients a satisfy certain gravitational equations which are characteristic of Einstein's theory and to obtain a material medium whose properties are associated with a quadratic difi'erential form having coefficients of the right type we may have to introduce polariza tions which travel with velocity c.
