Book Description
Excerpt from Bulletin of Sweet Briar College, Vol. 19: Fall Announcements 1936-1937; Student Register Religion and Social Problems Religion and Social Theory The Renaissance. For each of these majors there is a group of required courses and another group of electives. Each major includes at least 36 hours in addition to courses taken to meet the general requirements for the degree, but the total number of hours to be taken within the field varies, depend ing somewhat upon the degree of advancement of the required courses and their prerequisites. These majors are planned to concentrate the effort of the student upon some subject, some idea or influence, just as a departmental major does; but, whereas the concentration in a departmental major is within the department, the focus of interdepartmental majors is rather upon relationships cutting across departmental boundaries. It is intended that these interdepartmental majors shall afford greater flexibility for the programs of students whose interest is not confined within the regular departmental lines. The student electing one of these majors is to choose an adviser with the approval of the Dean. She will-plan her course in consultation with her adviser and the program must be approved by the departments con cerned, - that is, the departments represented in the list of required courses. In addition there will-be a faculty chairman for each major, who will have general supervision over it, will consult with the advisers and depart ment heads, and assist in making the student's course an integrated whole. Book Description
Excerpt from Bulletin of Sweet Briar College; October, 1929, Vol. 12: Alumnae News, 1929-1930 Few things that have happened at Sweet Briar have aroused more interest and enthusiasm than the announcement, at the very Opening of the endowment and building campaign in 1928, Of the gift of a new library by Mr. Fergus Reid. A new library under any circum stances would have been a great event in Sweet Briar's life, but com ing at such a time, as the gift of an old and true friend Of the college and in memory of his mother, Mary Helen Cochran, it aroused more than ordinary interest among all those who are concerned with Sweet Briar and its future. It is natural, therefore, that the laying of the cornerstone of the new building Should have constituted one Of the most important features of the Commencement Of 1929. This event took place on the afternoon of Monday, June 3, in the presence of a large gathering of students, faculty, alumnae and the many guests who had come to Sweet Briar for Commencement, and was marked by appropriate ceremonies. A small platform had been erected in the quadrangle formed by the new library building between Academic and Fletcher Hall, and here gathered the little procession Of those taking part in the program.
