Book Description
This book presents a multifunctional approach to the design of bulk nanostructured metals through severe plastic deformation (SPD). Materials engineering has traditionally involved selecting a suitable material for a given application. However, modern engineering frequently requires materials with a set of multifunctional, often conflicting properties: Enhanced mechanical properties need to be combined with improved physical (electrical, magnetic, etc.) and/or chemical (corrosion resistance, biocompatibility) properties. So disparate materials properties need to be engineered and optimized simultaneously. These requirements have created a paradigm shift in which the classical materials selection approach is replaced by design of material microstructures to achieve certain performance requirements, subject to constraints on individual properties such as strength, conductivity, and corrosion resistance. Written by researchers at the forefront of this new materials design approach, the present volume provides a comprehensive introduction to multifunctional design of bulk nanostructured materials, with applications ranging from hydrogen storage to construction engineering.

Bulk Nanostructured Materials PDF Author: Ruslan Z. Valiev
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118742575
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 468

Book Description
This book presents the most recent results in the area of bulk nanostructured materials and new trends in their severe plastic deformation (SPD) processing, where these techniques are now emerging from the domain of laboratory-scale research into the commercial production of various bulk nanomaterials. Special emphasis is placed on an analysis of the effect of nanostructures in materials fabricated by SPD on mechanical properties (strength and ductility, fatigue strength and life, superplasticity) and functional behavior (shape memory effects, magnetic and electric properties), as well as the numerous examples of their innovative applications. There is a high innovation potential for industrial applications of bulk nanomaterials for structural use (materials with extreme strength) as well as for functional applications such as nanomagnets, materials for hydrogen storage, thermoelectric materials, superconductors, catalysts, and biomedical implants.

Book Description
Timely information on scientific and engineering developments occurring in laboratories around the world provides critical input to maintaining the economic and technological strength of the United States. Moreover, sharing this information quickly with other countries can greatly enhance the productivity of scientists and engineers. These are some of the reasons why the National Science Foundation (NSF) has been involved in funding science and technology assessments comparing the United States and foreign countries since the early 1980s. A substantial number of these studies have been conducted by the World Technology Evaluation Center (WTEC) managed by Loyola College through a cooperative agreement with NSF. The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), Committee on Technology's Interagency Working Group on NanoScience, Engineering and Technology (CT/IWGN) worked with WTEC to develop the scope of this Nanostucture Science and Technology report in an effort to develop a baseline of understanding for how to strategically make Federal nanoscale R&D investments in the coming years. The purpose of the NSTC/WTEC activity is to assess R&D efforts in other countries in specific areas of technology, to compare these efforts and their results to U. S. research in the same areas, and to identify opportunities for international collaboration in precompetitive research. Many U. S. organizations support substantial data gathering and analysis efforts focusing on nations such as Japan. But often the results of these studies are not widely available. At the same time, government and privately sponsored studies that are in the public domain tend to be "input" studies.

Book Description
"This book provides an overview of the effect of nanostructuring in the multifunctionality of different widely studied nanomaterials from a broad approach that allows access to a public of chemists, (bio)engineers, physicists, nanotechnologists, undergraduates and professors. This book is divided into three parts that group materials sharing certain types of nanostructuring, including nanoporous, nanoparticled, 2D laminar materials, and a fourth section including computational studies of the nanostructures addressed. This structured approach in nanomaterials research will work as a valuable reference material for those who want to learn and explore nanoscience and nanotechnology from a rational point of view"--

Handbook of Polymer and Ceramic Nanotechnology

Handbook of Polymer and Ceramic Nanotechnology PDF Author: Chaudhery Mustansar Hussain
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9783030405120
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1667

Book Description
This handbook examines the recent advances in the nanotechnology of polymers and ceramics, which possess outstanding mechanical properties and compatibility given their unique physical and chemical properties caused by the unusually large surface area to volume ratios and high interfacial reactivity. This handbook highlights the various compositions and morphologies of polymer and ceramic nanomaterials that can serve as powerful tools for the diverse applications in areas such as electronics, photonics, shape-memory alloys, biomaterials and biomedical nanomaterials, graphene-based technologies, and textiles and packaging. The handbook addresses safety, economics, green production and sustainability. The book contains a section on functionalization of these molecules, which only increases the possibility of developing even more versatile materials that can be fine-tuned for specific applications. Filling a gap in the literature, this handbook provides comprehensive coverage of properties, fabrication, characterization, functionalization methods and applications at both experimental and theoretical models scales. Economic, toxicological, regulatory, and environmental concerns regarding applications are also discussed in detail. Special attention is paid to sustainable approaches that reduce costs in terms of chemicals and time consumption. The book covers research trends, challenges, and prospective topics as well.
