Book Description
Excerpt from Building a New Empire The story of "Building a New Empire" is not a story conceived in the vivid imagination of the author, or wrought from the wild scenes of the growing West in fiction or by inspiration, but a story of actual experience in making a new West, and the memory of the events of those trying times has led up to writing this manuscript. In general conversation these events have been related many times, and editors have asked for historical events to be written for publication, and the writer has been urged to put these actual facts in book form, so the conditions existing in the early days in the settlement of the "New Empire" might be known to the younger generations coming on to occupy the country so recently wrested from the wild man of the plains. The writer had expected to receive assistance from the few old settlers still living, and who had witnessed the meteoric changes in the West in the past thirty-five or forty years, but none could be found that could give additional facts or evidence of value. Many who passed through the wild scenes of the West could not be located, and those that could be found could give but very few reliable facts of value to add to the circumstances related, so the memory of one man is largely in evidence in writing a historical sketch of the last "new West." Book Description
Excerpt from The New Empire Similarly the French, in emergency, have always resorted to massacre to overcome obstruction, from the crusades against the Albigenses in the thirteenth century to the Commune of Paris in the nineteenth. It was not only Saint Bartholomew, and the persecu tions which followed the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, which brought about the Terror of I 793; it was rather a thousand nameless butcheries like those which occurred during the reign of Louis XIV. The incapacity of the French to ameliorate their fiscal system generated an unequal taxation which pro voked revolt, and revolt caused repression frightful in ferocity. At Rennes in 167 5, as a punishment for insubordination, the town was given up to pillage, and la Rue Haute, the main street, was destroyed. The inhabitants, Old men, women, and children, were driven forth into the fields without a refuge, with out food, and without a place to sleep. They perished from exposure and want. Book Description
Excerpt from The Making of the Empire State The chaptefg of this book consist, in the main, of the narration of epochal events in the growth of New York State. They do not constitute a connected history; indeed, it is doubtful if such a history has any place Whatever in juvenile literature. The things told, however, are events with which both young and old are expected to be familiar. In the preparation of the book I am indebted for information to the late Dr. Isaac Stout, of the Department of Public Instruction, and to Principal B. E. Hicks, of Painted Post. To my wife, Lilian Burnham Redway, I owe much for faithful and painstaking help. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Governance of Empire The object of presenting this work to the public is twofold. Firstly, as a colonial, my desire is to present a colonial view of the imperial idea, and, secondly, to endeavour to arouse among my countrymen, in the United Kingdom especially, a greater interest and pride in the Empire beyond the seas. My critics may point to the number of able works bearing directly or indirectly upon the British Empire which have been published within recent years, and it may even be said that I am repeating an oft-told tale, that many of the suggestions which I now put forward, with all due deference to these self-same critics, have been made before. My reply is, The thing that hath been, is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done; and there is no new thing under the sun (eccles. I.
