He married Barbara Neff Buckwalter (1840-1911), and raised a family of eleven children on a farm on the Strasburg Road in Paradise Township. The early ancestor, Andrew (Hans) Hersche, moved with his family from Appenzell, Switzerland to Palatinate, Germany and later on to Pennsylvania. They were mennonites.
