Book Description
While Mr. Featherston's annals of old Appomattox are not without historical interest, genealogists will surely wish to pour over the family histories for clues to their own ancestry. Featured in the historical narrative are sketches of Appomattox's ante bellum leadership, a first-hand account of the Confederate surrender from the diary of the author's grandmother, a map which reconstructs the buildings of the county seat in 1865, treatises on the county's businesses, educational system and churches, and brief biographies of the white and African-American civic leaders of the author's day. Of still greater interest, of course, are the 125 genealogies of varying length of Appomattox County families.

Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States Taken in the Year 1790
Author: United States Bureau Of The Census
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781390936513
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 438
Book Description
Excerpt from Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States Taken in the Year 1790: Pennsylvania The First Census of the United States (1790) com prised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. A complete set of the schedules for each state, with a summary for the counties, and in many cases for towns, was filed in the State Department, but unfortunately they are not now complete, the returns for the states of Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Tennes see, and Virginia having been destroyed when the British burned the Capitol at Washington during the War of 1812. For several of the states for which schedules are lacking it is probable that the Director of the Census could obtain lists which would present the names Of' most of the heads of families at the date of the First Census. In Virginia, state enumerations were made in 1782, 1783, 1784, and 1785, but the lists on file in the State Library include the names for only 39 of the 78 counties into which the state was divided.
