ISBN: 0795342985
Category : Fiction

Book Description
“If Hemingway had the passion for pool that he had for bullfighting, his hero might have been Eddie Felson” (Time). The novel that inspired the classic film starring Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason, The Hustler tells the story of Fast Eddie Felson, a young pool player who hustles suckers in small towns, looking for stake money so he can reach his goal: a marathon match in Chicago against Minnesota Fats. An exploration of guts, stamina, and character, and of the difference between winners and losers, this tense, gritty tale is “a wonderful hymn to the last true era when men of substance played pool with a vengeance” (Time Out).

Impossible?

Impossible? PDF Author: Julian Havil
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400829674
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 250

Book Description
In Nonplussed!, popular-math writer Julian Havil delighted readers with a mind-boggling array of implausible yet true mathematical paradoxes. Now Havil is back with Impossible?, another marvelous medley of the utterly confusing, profound, and unbelievable—and all of it mathematically irrefutable. Whenever Forty-second Street in New York is temporarily closed, traffic doesn't gridlock but flows more smoothly—why is that? Or consider that cities that build new roads can experience dramatic increases in traffic congestion—how is this possible? What does the game show Let's Make A Deal reveal about the unexpected hazards of decision-making? What can the game of cricket teach us about the surprising behavior of the law of averages? These are some of the counterintuitive mathematical occurrences that readers encounter in Impossible? Havil ventures further than ever into territory where intuition can lead one astray. He gathers entertaining problems from probability and statistics along with an eclectic variety of conundrums and puzzlers from other areas of mathematics, including classics of abstract math like the Banach-Tarski paradox. These problems range in difficulty from easy to highly challenging, yet they can be tackled by anyone with a background in calculus. And the fascinating history and personalities associated with many of the problems are included with their mathematical proofs. Impossible? will delight anyone who wants to have their reason thoroughly confounded in the most astonishing and unpredictable ways.

Book Description
Will Bronson wanted a ranch, and he found the perfect location, but the odds were against him. Keeping Texas longhorns alive through the brutal winter in the badlands of the Dakota Territory was a hard enough task, so he didn't need a feud with the Deckers. When he left for the west he promised his younger brother Barney he would send for him when he was able. Things were going good for him now, and the money was finally coming in, so that time finally came. Barney was not much a rancher but he was experienced at running a store, so opening the store proved profitable for both of them. Then he met a woman, and he knew he wanted her in his life, but he would not do anything to come between her and his brother. He tried to stay away from her as much as possible, afraid that his feelings would show and complicate things, but it was not an easy thing to do. Her son Rusty followed him everywhere and he was teaching him about being a ranch hand and generally the ways of the west, but each night he rode home with him she would be waiting.Things changed slowly in the west, but tragedy had a way of coming quickly, and it was tragedy that sent him on the vengeance trail. The Deckers were out and out killers with no respect for any human life, and he had to stop them before they stopped him.Like most of the men around him he was proficient with both a pistol and a rifle, but he had never killed a man. Now the Deckers were calling him out and he was answering the call, but he would go alone so no more of his friends would be killed.Moses Decker was mean, and his four sons were equally mean...could they be the downfall of his dreams? He found the vengeance trail a hard one to follow, and was not prepared for what waited at the trail's end.

Speaking of Animals

Speaking of Animals PDF Author: Robert Palmatier
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313368384
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 497

Book Description
No other nonhuman source has served as the basis for more metaphors than animals. Speaking of Animals is a dictionary of animal metaphors that are current in American English. It is comprehensive, historical, and metaphor-based. Each entry refers to the other dictionaries that catalog that same metaphor, and the dates of first appearance in writing are supplied, where possible, for both the metaphor and the name of the source. The main text is organized alphabetically by metaphor rather than by animal or animal behavior; all the metaphors are classified according to their animal source in a list at the end of the book. An animal metaphor is a word, phrase, or sentence that expresses a resemblance or similarity between someone or something and a particular animal or animal class. True metaphors are single words, such as the noun tiger, the verb hog, and the adjective chicken. Phrasal metaphors combine true metaphors with other words, such as blind tiger, hog the road, and chicken colonel. Other animal metaphors take the form of similes, such as like rats leaving a sinking ship and prickly as a hedgehog. Still others take the form of proverbs, such as Don't count your chickens before they hatch and Let sleeping dogs lie. The horse is the animal most frequently referred to in metaphors, followed closely by the dog. The Bible is the most prolific literary source of animal metaphors, followed closely by Shakespeare.
