The Freshwater Ecosystems of Suriname

The Freshwater Ecosystems of Suriname PDF Author: P.E. Ouboter
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401120706
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 318

Book Description
Since the limnological research on the man-made Brokopondo Reservoir in the 'sixties, numerous data have been collected on the ecology of Surinam rivers and swamps. This book is a compilation of these data: it is the first comprehensive survey of the aquatic ecology of one of the peripheral areas of Amazonia. The geomorphology of the country, situated on the Guyana Shield, is the main factor determining the limnological properties of rivers and creeks. This results in an overall picture that is quite different from Amazonia. The emphasis of The Ecosystems of Suriname is on the living aquatic resources, including aquatic and swamp vegetation, phyto and zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. Although most of Suriname is still in a pristine state, the human impact on fresh waters is considerable in those areas of rapid economic development, emphasizing the necessity of conservation measures, specially tailored for aquatic ecosystems. The Ecosystems of Suriname is a valuable acquisition for all scientists, environmental managers and others interested in tropical aquatic ecology.

Comparative Reservoir Limnology and Water Quality Management

Comparative Reservoir Limnology and Water Quality Management PDF Author: M. Straskraba
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401710961
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 295

Book Description
The volume starts with comparative reservoir limnology and deals with problems relating to tropical, semi-arid and temperate reservoirs. The second part concerns mathematical models of reservoirs, including new techniques for investigating their limnology. These cover physical, chemical and biological phenomena, remote sensing and the use of modelling to establish the most efficient strategy for water quality sampling. In the third, on reservoir water quality management, the potential available in fish population management for biomanipulation of reservoir water quality is introduced. Also included is a valuable section on a wide range of water quality measures, coming from the well-known Czech Hydrobiological Laboratory. Finally the editors summarise the present state of reservoir limnology. This book will be of interest to hydrobiologists and aquatic ecologists, reservoir and sanitary engineers, fisheries officers, postgraduate teaching, and the water industry dealing with drinking water supply and will provide insight into regulated rivers. It draws information from all over the world and is relevant to the whole world.

The Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Maroons in Suriname

The Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Maroons in Suriname PDF Author: Ellen-Rose Kambel
Publisher: IWGIA
ISBN: 9788790730178
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 214

Book Description
This volume describes and analyses the Surinamese legal system as it relates to the rights of indigenous peoples and Maroons. The rights of these peoples have not been systematically addressed in this context before, nor have they ever been the subjects of extensive academic research. The book provides a good starting point for discussions of the rights of indigenous peoples and Maroons, hopefully leading to a full recognition of their rights in Suriname.
