Book Description
When The Broken Sun, an ancient artefact said to lead to the lost city of Atlantis, is stolen from the British Museum, Jack, Scarlet and Mr Doyle embark on a hunt across Europe to find it. But just as the artefact is within reach, their beloved secretary is mysteriously poisoned. In their race against time to find the antidote, the team uncovers a deadly plan, to attack the Houses of Parliament. Though no one has banked on another shocking discovery - that Mr Doyle's long-dead son may still be alive... Darrell Pitt began his lifelong appreciation of Victorian literature when he read the Sherlock Holmes stories as a child, quickly moving on to H.G. Wells and Jules Verne. This early reading led to a love of comics, science fiction and all things geeky. Darrell is now married with one daughter. He lives in Melbourne. There are three Jack Mason Adventures to date: The Firebird Mystery, The Secret Abyss and The Broken Sun. Praise for the Jack Mason Adventures: 'A fun story, easy to read and full of action. The action, by the way, is excellently written...Bonus points for being the first kids’ book of its kind I’ve come across that gives mention to the suffragettes!' Books+Publishing 'Lots of mechanical mayhem and derring-do - breathless stuff.' Michael Pryor 'Non-stop action, non-stop adventure, non-stop fun!' Richard Harland 'Set in a fantastical London, filled with airships, steam cars and metrotowers stretching into space, this fast paced adventure and homage to the world of Victoria literature and Conan Doyle offers an enjoyable roller-coaster read for fans of Artemis Fowl and the Lemony Snicket series...[a] rollicking who-dunnit that will keep young Sherlocks guessing to the very end.' Magpies 'Charming, witty and intelligently written...this series no doubt will be a huge hit for early teens, the writing is intelligent and Darrell Pitt has created characters that challenge and provoke readers to invest in the storyline.' Diva Booknerd 'Mind-bending mystery.' Launceston Examiner 'A thrilling book that contains adventurous characters...4 1⁄2 stars. Recommended to girls and boys 10 and above who love crime and mystery solving.' Celine, 11 years, Alphabet Soup blog 'I was swept along by the fast-paced plot, captivated by the characters and surprised at a major twist at the end. I do recommend this book for readers 9 years and over who like action, mystery and adventure.' Buzz Words

Broken Halves of a Milky Sun

Broken Halves of a Milky Sun PDF Author: Aaiún Nin
Publisher: Astra Publishing House
ISBN: 1662600798
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 98

Book Description
With the emotional undertow of Ocean Vuong and the astute political observations of Natalie Diaz, a powerful poetry debut exploring the effects of racism, war and colonialism, queer love and desire. In their breathtaking international debut, Aaiún Nin plumbs the depths of the lived and enduring effects of colonialism in their native country, Angola. In these pages, Nin untangles complexities of exile, the reckoning of familial love, but also reveals the power of queer love and desire through the body that yearns to love and be loved. Nin shows the ways in which faith and devotion serve as forms of oppression and interrogates the nature of home by reclaiming the persistent echoes of trauma. A captivating blend of evocative prose and intimate testimony, Nin speaks to the universal vulnerability of existence.

Broken Sun, Broken Moon

Broken Sun, Broken Moon PDF Author: Brent Hayward
Publisher: ChiZine Publications
ISBN: 1771484772
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
From the author of Filaria, The Fecund’s Melancholy Daughter, and Head Full of Mountains comes Brent Hayward’s debut short story collection, featuring ten stories spanning his career, plus two new, previously unpublished pieces, the novelette Lake of Dreams and the titular novella. In Broken Sun, Broken Moon, the storm has passed but gravity is weak again. The scribe isn’t feeling well. Houses in palmetto break apart and float away. Mechanisms behind the sun and the moon are breaking down. And now government men sail into town, from the capital, bringing with them a newborn perfect—the first in years. They’re looking for the scribe, and they’re not very happy. In Lake of Dreams, George Triplehorn was passed over by rapture when it swept the planet. Dead people either stayed that way or got fed up with conditions and moved to the moon. Like the others left behind, George tried to muddle by, making a living with his new skills as an entertainer, but things just weren’t the same. When Myron, his agent, doctor, and sometimes shrink, lands him a gig in Lake of Dreams, the largest lunar necropolis, George figures it might just be the ticket to boost a flagging career and maybe even get his life back on track. But he’s never been to the moon before, his so-called skills are acting up, and he soon discovers that the dead are not his greatest fans. This collection, like Brent Hayward’s other works, breaks the boundaries of literary science fiction.

Breaking Away From Broken Windows

Breaking Away From Broken Windows PDF Author: Ralph Taylor
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429981643
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 343

Book Description
In Breaking Away from Broken Windows Ralph Taylor uses data on recent Baltimore crime-reduction efforts to attack the 'broken windows' thesis--that is, the currently fashionable notion that by reducing or eliminating superficial signs of disorder (dilapidated buildings, graffiti, incivil behavior by teenagers, etc.), urban police deparments can make significant and lasting reductions in crime. Taylor argues that such measures, while useful, are only a partial solution to the problem at hand. His data supports a materialist view: changes in levels of physical decay, superficial social disorder, and racial composition do not lead to higher crime, while economic decline does. He contends that the Baltimore example shows that in order to make real, long-term reductions in crime, urban politicians, businesses, and community leaders must work together to improve the economic fortunes of those living in high-crime areas.
