Shipbuilding in the United Kingdom

Shipbuilding in the United Kingdom PDF Author: Hugh Murphy
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000331792
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 193

Book Description
Shipbuilding in the United Kingdom provides a systematic historical account of the British Shipbuilders Corporation, first looking at this major industry under private enterprise, then under state control, and finally back in private hands. The chapters trace the evolution of public policy regarding shipbuilding, ship repair, and large marine engine building through the tenures of radically different Labour and Conservative governments, and through the response of the board of the British Shipbuilders Corporation, trade unions, and local management also. The book benefits from comprehensive archival research and interviews from the 1990s with leading players in the industry, as well as politicians, shipbuilders, trade union leaders, and senior civil servants. This authoritative monograph is a valuable resource for advanced students and researchers across the fields of business history, economic history, industrial history, labour history, maritime history, and British history.

The Battleship Builders Constructing and Arming British Capital Ships

The Battleship Builders Constructing and Arming British Capital Ships PDF Author: Ian Buxton
Publisher: Seaforth Publishing
ISBN: 1848320930
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 323

Book Description
The launch in 1606 of HMS Dreadnought, the worlds's first all-big-gun battleship, rendered all existing battle fleets obsolete, but at the same time it wiped out the Royal Navy's numerical advantage, so expensively maintained for decades. Already locked in the same arms race with Germany, Britain urgently needed to build an entirely new battle fleet of these larger, more complex and more costly vessels In this she succeeded spectacularly; in little over a decade fifty such ships were completed, almost exactly double that of what Germany achieved It was only made possible by the companyƍs vast industrial nexus of shipbuilders, engine manufacturers, armament fleets and specialist armour producers, whose contribution to the Grand Feet is too often ignored. This heroic achievement, and how it was done, is the subject of this book. It charts the rise of the large industrial conglomerates that were key to this success, looks at the reaction to fast-moving technical changes, and analyses the politics of funding this vast national effort, both before and beyond the Great War. It also attempts to assess the true cost- and value- of the Grand Fleet in terms of the resources consumed. And finally, by way of contrast, it describes the effects of the post-war recession, industrial contraction, and the very different responses to rearmament in the run up to the Second World War.

Co-operative Research in Industry

Co-operative Research in Industry PDF Author: D.W. Hill
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351332139
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
This book, first published in 1947, sets out to describe what co-operative research is, how it is organised and in what way it contributes to a variety of problems around the globe. The need for scientific research can often be beyond a single company; co-operative research can provide the people, materials and money on a scale that is otherwise lacking. The book looks at the scope of co-operative research internationally, with chapters focusing on the UK and US, as well as the rest of the world.
