Book Description
This patent covers 'heavy' ion exchange resins with normal functional groups attached, having a polymeric structure which includes substituted benzene groups wherein bromine and/or iodine atoms are included in the polymeric structure of the resin itself, the increased density (g/ml) being due to the inclusion of the bromine or iodine (called the SENBRIX resins). The 'heavy resin' is a polystyrene resin cross-linked with divinyl benzine which is aminated using pyridine or trimethylamine. A method of preparing the resin is also specified. The resin may be chloromethylated prior to or after the bromination or iodination. Amination is effected after chloro-methylation and bromination or iodination. The bromination or iodination is effected using pure bromine or iodine and a suitable catalyst. The impurities and relative loading rates of the heavy resins are comparable with non brominated equivalents. The higher density should result in an improved performance in counter current ion exchange systems.
