Book Description
In September 2015, a scientific conference was held in Graz, Austria, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Josef Poelt's death. This scientist was one of the most renowned botanists of the last century who worked on many groups of lower plants, fungi and especially lichens. Of the contributions at the conference, 25 have been worked out and are presented in this book. They have been written mainly by former doctoral students of Josef Poelt or their scholars, or by some of his colleagues with whom he had cooperated. In the first contribution, a description of Josef Poelt's life and scientific career, his fields of study, his colleagues, important research trips, his scientific oeuvre and its approval within the scientific community is given. This paper also gives a list of Poelt's doctoral students and the many fields they worked on. In the second contribution, an overview of the history and development of cryptogamic research is presented in view of more and more refined analysis techniques and the resulting outcome. These two reviews are followed by a series of papers on taxonomical, ecological and applied aspects of saprobic, symbiotic or parasitic fungi, or of lichens, respectively. The papers are based on classical, ecological, geographical as well as molecular studies and offer insight into the distribution or into the phylogeny and taxonomy of selected groups of fungi and lichens. A few papers stress aspects on the state of research of groups of organisms in special regions of the world, while others deal with the state of research from a historical point of view. The final contribution deals with phylogenetic aspects in mosses. The more than 700-page book is complemented by many informative illustrations, schemes and images.

The Kingdom Fungi

The Kingdom Fungi PDF Author: Steven L. Stephenson
Publisher: Timber Press
ISBN: 1604694025
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 329

Book Description
The ubiquitous fungi are little known and vastly underappreciated. Yet, without them we wouldn’t have bread, alcohol, cheese, tofu, or the unique flavors of mushrooms, morels, and truffles. We can’t survive without fungi. The Kingdom Fungi provides a comprehensive look at the biology, structure, and morphological diversity of these necessary organisms. It sheds light on their ecologically important roles in nature, their fascinating relationships with people, plants, and animals, and their practical applications in the manufacture of food, beverages, and pharmaceuticals. The book includes information about “true” fungi, fungus-like creatures (slime molds and water molds), and a group of “composite” organisms (lichens) that are more than just fungi. Particular attention is given to examples of fungi that might be found in the home and encountered in nature. The Kingdom Fungi is a useful introductory text for naturalists, mycologists, and anyone who wants to become more familiar with, and more appreciative of, the fascinating world of fungi.

Book Description
Excerpt from British Mosses What then is a Moss? This is a question not to be hastily answered, and will I think be best answered at the end and not at the beginning of this paper. If you are working deductively, your definitions may come at the beginning; but if by patient investigation into natural facts, beware of starting with definitions - they ought to be the ripest fruit of your longest labour. Classzfication. Vegetable productions are commonly divided into two great groups those which possess obvious blossoms, or Phanerogams, and those which possess no obvious blossoms, or Cryptogams. The Cryptogams are again divided into two great groups - those Whose structure is built up of cells without regularly formed vessels, such as sea weeds, fungi and lichens, the cellular Cryptogams; and those which, like the ferns and the club-mosses, possess, in addition to cells, regularly formed vessels; these are known as Vascular Cryptogams.
