This book is an investigation of youth and adolescence in pre-industrial England. It concentrates on young people from the middle or lower groups of society, who, between 1500 and 1800, left home to work as apprentices, agricultural labourers or in domestic service. Drawing on municipal, ecclesiastical and parish records, and over 70 autobiographies, Ben-Amos focusses on aspects of youth as they related to maturation: the separation of adolescents from their parents; their working lives and relationships with their employers or masters and mistresses; the relative independence and autonomy exercised by younger women; the role of the young in religious affairs; and the question of whether there was such as thing as a youth subculture.

The Princely Collections, Liechtenstein gained momentum during the early 17th century when Prince Karl I commissioned several works, including Adriaen de Fries's life-sized bronze of Christ in Distress. From that point on, the artistic holdings of the principality grew and were shaped by each successive monarch. Over the centuries, the collections expanded to include works by masters such as da Vinci, Botticelli, Rembrandt, Rubens, and van Dyck. Marsden Hartley had a lifelong personal and aesthetic engagement with Maine, where he was born in 1877 and where he died at age sixty-six. As an important member of the artistic circle promoted by Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley began his career by painting the mountains of western Maine. He subsequently led a peripatetic life, traveling throughout Europe and North America and only occasionally visiting his native state. Yoshijiro Urushibara: A Japanese printmaker in London is a catalogue raisonn of the work of Yoshijiro Urushibara (1889-1953), a Japanese artist and craftsman who lived and worked in London from 1910 to 1940. During his thirty years in Europe, Urushibara produced a considerable number of prints and played a major role in encouraging the production and appreciation of the colour woodcut in the Japanese manner, especially in Britain.
