Book Description
Brasília Gigapan Photo Essay Brasília the modernist utopia This eBook brings hundreds of pictures of Brasília's most iconic modernist architecture and art, along with a brief info of each monument, piece or building. Don Rocha shot Brasília using Gigapan panoramic equipment which is based on the same technology employed by the Mars Rovers. Gigapan robotic mounts take hundreds photos, which are later combined using a stitching software to create a single highly detailed image. We can then select parts of this photo to zoom in on, and zoom in. Then zoom in some more. There's no part of the photo we can't see in ridiculous detail. Inaugurated in 1960, Brasilia – the capital city of Brazil is a masterpiece of modernist architecture. It is the only city in the world built in the 20th century to be awarded (in 1987) the status of Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The city was planned and developed with Lúcio Costa as the principal urban planner and Oscar Niemeyer as the principal architect. Lúcio Costa planned the streets in such a way that even traffic lights would not be necessary: cars and buses would take thoroughfares to travel long distances, then would use one of several loops to gain access to local streets to reach specific destinations. Much of the original planning has been affected, mostly because of the growth of Brasília and many other factors. Planned for only 500,000 inhabitants, Brasília has seen its population grow much more than expected. It has now a population of about 3 million making it the third largest city in Brazil. “Brasília seems the ultimate modernist fantasy: pristine, elegant, refined , and a remarkable demonstration of lucidity. Don Rocha’s shots seem to offer a sumptuousness to that vision. The light, color and panorama provide an exoticism. The modernist utopia of a socially ambitious beauty comes unhinged, when we see in the shadow of the great civic buildings, children living amongst the trees." Don Rocha's photographs offer a unique perspective on Brasília. They allow us to see the city in a way that we would not be able to see it otherwise. They are a testament to the beauty and power of modern architecture, and they are a reminder of the potential that Brasília has to be a great city.

Book Description
Brasília - the modernist utopia A photographic essay by Adonai Rocha Brasília seems the ultimate modernist fantasy: pristine, elegant, refined , and a remarkable demonstration of lucidity. These shots seem to offer a sumptuousness to that vision. The light, color and panorama provide an exoticism. The modernist utopia of a socially ambitious beauty comes unhinged, when we see in the shadow of the great civic buildings, children living amongst the trees. That this cultivated treat of Brasília arises or was created ex-nihilo (or out of nothing) suggests to me a certain view that the natural process of growth, in all its human messiness, is somehow corrupt. The experience of the GigaPan in viewing these images provides remarkable intimacy. At the same time I seem a voyeur. And I feel strongly compelled to experience it firsthand. Maura Doern Danko, Painter, Faculty Humanities / General Education Department The Art Institute of Pittsburgh History Inaugurated in 1960, Brasilia - the capital city of Brazil is a masterpiece of modernist architecture. It is the only city in the world built in the 20th century to be awarded (in 1987) the status of Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Behind the construction of Brasília lay a monumental campaign to construct an entire new Capital City for Brazil. In 1956, Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira is elected President and ordered the construction of Brasília, fulfilling an article of the country's constitution dating back to 1891 stating that the capital should be moved from Rio de Janeiro to a place close to the center of the country. Kubitschek invites a young architect, Oscar Niemeyer, to command the project. In the same year, the work on site starts.

Art and Animals
Author: Giovanni Aloi
Publisher: I.B. Tauris
ISBN: 9781848855250
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 192
Book Description
'Art is continually haunted by the animal', wrote Deleuze and Guattari. Over the past two decades, animals have quite literally invaded the gallery space, from Joseph Beuys' co-habiting with a coyote, Janis Kounelli's instillation of live horses, Damien Hirst's shark in formaldehyde to Mark Dion's natural history displays and Marco Evaristti's 'goldfish in a blender'. In this latest addition to the highly acclaimed 'Art and...' series, Giovanni Aloi surveys the insistent presence of animals in the world of contemporary art, exploring the leading concepts which inform this emerging practice. From exhibitions featuring live animals, to taxidermy, and interspecies communication, Giovanni Aloi explores how animals feature in modern art with a range of thought-provoking and innovative visual representations. Art and Animals challenges ideas of identity, 'otherness' and civilisation by explaining the role animals have occupied in our cultural development and illustrating their presence in the visual arts today.

Out of Africa I
Author: John G Fleagle
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9048190363
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 293
Book Description
For the first two thirds of our evolutionary history, we hominins were restricted to Africa. Dating from about two million years ago, hominin fossils first appear in Eurasia. This volume addresses many of the issues surrounding this initial hominin intercontinental dispersal. Why did hominins first leave Africa in the early Pleistocene and not earlier? What do we know about the adaptations of the hominins that dispersed - their diet, locomotor abilities, cultural abilities? Was there a single dispersal event or several? Was the hominin dispersal part of a broader faunal expansion of African mammals northward? What route or routes did dispersing populations take?

Guimarota
Author: Thomas Martin
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 164
Book Description
The Guimarota coal mine in central Portugal is the most important fossil locality in the world for Late Jurassic mammals and other small vertebrates. From 1973 to 1982 the mine was worked exclusively for paleontological purposes all year round, which represents one of the most ambitious enterprises in the history of paleontology. Tens of thousands of skulls, jaws, bones, and teeth of terrestrial and aquatic vertebrates and countless invertebrate and plant remains were collected. A great international sensation was created by the discovery of the first complete skeleton of an ancestor of modern mammals.Twenty specialists from geo- and biosciences summarize in 21 chapters the latest findings of more than 30 years of interdisciplinary research on the Guimarota locality. The book deals with the history of discovery, excavations, geology, stratigraphy, paleobiology, and paleoecology of the fossil locality. It is illustrated with many large size colour prints and provides an exciting insight into a Late Jurassic ecosystem at the eastern shore of the Proto-North Atlantic, at a time when giant dinosaurs ruled the world and tiny mammals had just begun their careers. The book will be of interest not only to paleontologists and geologists, but also to students and scholars of the bio- and geosciences. It should also be welcomed by a more general public interested in palaeontology, geology, and evolution.
