Brandy Sours PDF Author: Bryan Hill
Publisher: Troubador Publishing Ltd
ISBN: 1788038738
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 384

Book Description
Will appeal to all who have wished to head for a sun-drenched island life in the Mediterranean. Includes the fascinating history and politics of the divided Island of Cyprus. A real life modern day experience similar to the popular Durrells TV program. With retirement fast approaching Bryan Hill was searching for at least one more big adventure. In late 2004 he, and his wife Irene, sold their home in Devon and moved to Northern Cyprus. They thought it would be life changing experience. And so it proved, with an abundant share of mind-numbing, frustrating, downright hilarious and sometimes scary brushes with the law, the military and, above all, the bureaucracy of this small island stuck in the middle of the Eastern Mediterranean. Also included are some of the legends and folk law of the country which are equally fascinating and sometimes more believable than the reality of life there. To give a better understanding of the absurdities of life there, Bryan has sketched a brief history of Cyprus and the political events that have overtaken the island, particularly in the last 100 years. This is done with a tongue-in-cheek approach but this is not intended to trivialise the pain that many Cypriots suffer from the division of the island and its people. Bryan kept a journal in the form of a blog to keep in touch with friends and family while living in Cyprus. This proved extremely popular and he has used it as the basis for this memoir. As he says: ‘Looking back, if we knew then what we know now, I don’t suppose we would have had the courage to do it... but we are so glad that we did. We had the time of our lives!’

Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 469

Book Description
Greenstreet and Back is an amazing, humorous autobiography that follows a journey from, a near death experience, to an incredible passage of self acceptance and realisation. The true story of painful rehabilitation dips into the black humour of facing your own mortality and the acceptance that the life once known was now a thing of the past. The book is a chronicle of courage and fortitude that shows with determination any obstacle can be overcome. Francis begins a pilgrimage to learn about his new life that eventually takes him to the other side of the world to exotic South East Asia. His hilarious encounters along the way happen mostly by chance and very unexpectedly. From a near molestation by a dancing Ladyboy in Northern Thailand to a "run in" with gun tooting bandits in Cambodia, the quest gets ever more bizarre and farcical. Eventually Francis experiences an epiphany but fate has one more harsh and cruel card to play towards the end of his odyssey.

A Pilot's Ups and Downs

A Pilot's Ups and Downs PDF Author: Alasdair Sutherland
Publisher: Austin Macauley Publishers
ISBN: 1035819791
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 252

Book Description
For every 1,000 people who applied to be airline pilots in BEA/BOAC back in the day, about four made it. The other 996, plus their wives, parents, and children, might wonder how their lives could have turned out, so here is the story of one of the four. Besides, the passengers who sit behind that locked door and trust us with their lives must wonder, “What goes on up there, and how does it affect their lives and families?” My education included the University Air Squadron, then learning to fly at the College sponsored by British Airways. There is a chapter of general information on aviation, then most of the book is an account of my experiences, whether dramatic, disappointing, exciting, or amusing, during my varied career in British Airways. Some incidents occur within the cockpit, others in social interaction outside, and a few come from pilot folklore. I also describe visits to sights around the world, an aspect that draws people to aviation as a career, and interests everyone. I have added one professional pilot’s opinion on aviation topics in the news, the mysterious Malaysian disappearance, and the Alpine tragedy, and finish with my lifelong interest in designing model aircraft.

Reconstructing Conflict

Reconstructing Conflict PDF Author: Scott Kirsch
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317070321
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 365

Book Description
Reconstruction - the rebuilding of state, economy, culture and society in the wake of war - is a powerful idea, and a profoundly transformative one. From the refashioning of new landscapes in bombed-out cities and towns to the reframing of national identities to accommodate changed historical narratives, the term has become synonymous with notions of "post-conflict" society; it draws much of its rhetorical power from the neat demarcation, both spatially and temporally, between war and peace. The reality is far more complex. In this volume, reconstruction is identified as a process of conflict and of militarized power, not something that clearly demarcates a post-war period of peace. Kirsch and Flint bring together an internationally diverse range of studies by leading scholars to examine how periods of war and other forms of political violence have been justified as processes of necessary and valid reconstruction as well as the role of war in catalyzing the construction of new political institutions and destroying old regimes. Challenging the false dichotomy between war and peace, this book explores instead the ways that war and peace are mutually constituted in the creation of historically specific geographies and geographical knowledges.
