When Estela unexpectedly dies while visiting the United States, Gina finds she has been bequeathed a legacy of freedom to create her own memories, her own version of the past. Like SalingerÍs Holden Caulfield, or the heroines of Joyce Carol OatesÍs Foxfire, the teenaged protagonist of Brand New Memory is possessed of a voice so simpàticaso engrossing in her perception of herself, her family, and her friendsthat we find ourselves mesmerized and unable to stop turning the pages.

Chicana/o and Latina/o Fiction
Author: Ylce Irizarry
Publisher: University of Illinois Press
ISBN: 0252098072
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 277
Book Description
In this new study, Ylce Irizarry moves beyond literature that prioritizes assimilation to examine how contemporary fiction depicts being Cuban, Dominican, Mexican, or Puerto Rican within Chicana/o and Latina/o America. Irizarry establishes four dominant categories of narrative--loss, reclamation, fracture, and new memory--that address immigration, gender and sexuality, cultural nationalisms, and neocolonialism. As she shows, narrative concerns have moved away from the weathered notions of arrival and assimilation. Contemporary Chicana/o and Latina/o literatures instead tell stories that have little, if anything, to do with integration into the Anglo-American world. The result is the creation of new memory. This reformulation of cultural membership unmasks the neocolonial story and charts the conscious engagement of cultural memory. It outlines the ways contemporary Chicana/o and Latina/o communities create belonging and memory of their ethnic origins. An engaging contribution to an important literary tradition, Chicana/o and Latina/o Fiction privileges the stories Chicanas/os and Latinas/os remember about themselves rather than the stories of those subjugating them. NACCS Book Award, National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies, 2018; MLA Prize in United States Latina and Latino and Chicana and Chicano Literary and Cultural Studies, Modern Language Association, 2017

Book Description
THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER 'Truly fascinating.' Steve Wright, BBC Radio 2 - Have you ever forgotten the name of someone you’ve met dozens of times? - Or discovered that your memory of an important event was completely different from everyone else’s? - Or vividly recalled being in a particular place at a particular time, only to discover later that you couldn’t possibly have been? The result is an exploration of our minds that both fascinating and unnerving, and that will make you question how much you can ever truly know about yourself. Think you have a good memory? Think again. 'A spryly paced, fun, sometimes frightening exploration of how we remember – and why everyone remembers things that never truly happened.' Pacific Standard

The Bible Predicts the Mandela Effect
Author: Steve Adams
Publisher: Magus Books
ISBN:
Category : Bibles
Languages : en
Pages : 120
Book Description
Have you heard of Dead Humanity theory? It says that humanity died on 21 December, 2012, exactly as predicted by the Mayans. This might come as a big surprise to you given that you no doubt believe you are very much alive. But are you? Haven't you noticed that things have been getting seriously weird in the last few years? Things don't seem to be, er, as real as they used to be. We seem to be in some fantasy world, getting more bizarre by the second. People are behaving extremely oddly. Have we all actually become ghosts and just didn't realize we actually died? Dead Humanity theory says that 21 December, 2012 was actually when we were uploaded overnight into a technological Singularity and became part of an amazing simulation, a true Matrix. Our bodies became avatars, so realistic we couldn't tell the difference (or we were programmed not to see any difference). We were given a new "reality principle" which was to accept the simulation as reality and to believe we had always been in this reality, when in fact we only entered it a few years ago. Our memories were adjusted by the Readjustment Bureau to make everything seem "normal". In the years leading up to the Death of Humanity, many people were subjected to various test experiments to prove the concept. They had their consciousness uploaded to the Singularity, then back again. Since they experienced different things in the Simulation, they ended up with conflicting memories. This all became known as the Mandela effect. Some people in the simulation realized that things had changed dramatically and they came up with the Dead Internet theory, which said that the Internet wasn't the same as it used to be. It had actually died and been replaced by an Internet controlled by AI, algorithms and bots. Most content on the Internet was bot-generated. Most social media updates were by bots. We were responding to a bot-created world that had less and less need for humans. These people hadn't got quite the right theory. It wasn't the Internet that had died, it was humanity! However, these people had powerfully intuited that something phenomenally strange was going on. They just hadn't realized how strange. As Sir Arthur Eddington said, "Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine." When in doubt, consult the Bible. It has all the answers, God's answers. What people have failed to realize is that the Bible itself predicts the Mandela effect.

Noche Buena
Author: Nicolas Kanellos
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198030932
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 385
Book Description
A family seated round the fireplace Singing and making merry; A sprightly waltz played with grace Noche Buena brings us all the magic of the Christmas season as seen through the eyes of the Hispanic Americans who celebrate it. Christmas is at times a universal story, and many of the images here are recognizable across cultures. We hear and see proud, joyful singing; the adoration of the Infant Jesus; and the peaceful strains of Adeste Fidelis. But here as well are the rich traditions and legends specific to the Hispanic culture, such as the celebration of the posadas for nine nights leading up to Christmas, with candy raining down from colorful swinging piñatas, egg shells filled with confetti, and beautiful paper lanterns crafted to illuminate the town on Christmas Eve. There is the "Legend of the Poinsettia" where a poor child embarrassed by the modesty of his gift for the Christ Child sheds tears on the dull green leaves of the familiar plant, thereby miraculously transforming them to a brilliant red. And here too are hopeful children singing "If You Give Me Meat Pies," asking for the reward of warm meat pies and rice pudding in return for their sweet caroling. Thirty-six inspiring literary selections comprise this enchanting collection of works from Mexican, Colombian, Cuban, and Puerto Rican writers--writers who represent the range of Hispanic minority groups in the United States. Through these stories, traditional tales, songs, and poetry, readers gain a true understanding of the importance of the Christmas holiday within the Hispanic community, and begin to grasp the issues that inform the Hispanic American creative process--issues such as communal identity, patriotism, poverty, assimilation, and religion. With vivid illustrations and original Spanish text for all poetry, this fascinating anthology will inform readers of all cultural backgrounds, and give them the opportunity to celebrate this cherished time with a newly extended family.
