The Complete Guide to Boston Terriers

The Complete Guide to Boston Terriers PDF Author: Vanessa Richie
Publisher: LP Media Inc
ISBN:
Category : Pets
Languages : en
Pages : 164

Book Description
Known as the American gentleman, the Boston Terrier always appears to be ready for sophisticated fun. But owning one can come with its own set of unique challenges for an owner who is unprepared for the quirks and personality of this loveable, but often mischievous breed. Written by experienced author and dog owner Vanessa Richie, The Complete Guide to Boston Terriers is an excellent overview of the breed, covering everything a new owner will need to know to successfully raise their BT. Plus, it contains information, tips, and advice from some of the top Boston Terrier breeders in the world. Be prepared to take on the challenges of owning a Boston Terrier by learning about: Picking the right Boston Terrier for your family and home Preparing to bring your BT home Boston Terrier health and wellness Integrating your new BT with your current pets Housetraining Boston Terrier socialization Training Nutrition Grooming Genetic health concerns common to Boston Terriers Caring for an aging Boston Terrier Generally considered a fantastic dog for first time dog families, the Boston Terrier has an incredibly friendly personality that makes him a great addition to any home. Socialization is fairly easy because the breed is naturally friendly. Training may be a bit more difficult, particularly housetraining, so do be prepared to put in a lot of extra patience and some extra time to get your puppy to the point where accidents become a thing of the past. They adore their people, though some are prone to choosing one favorite person, and it will be obvious as they will become like a shadow to their favorite person. This is also a breed that has a wide range of personalities, with some being bouncy and fun, while others are more dignified and mellow. What most of them have in common though is how much they enjoy spending time with the people in their lives. They are also easy to integrate into a home with other dogs, and even cats – as long as the cat doesn’t totally object to your new dog. The biggest drawback to the breed is their numerous genetic health issues. Part of the issues stem from the fact that the Boston Terrier has a short nose, which increases the number of issues with their large eyes and hampers their ability to breath as easily as dogs with longer snouts. They are also prone to bother allergies and stomach sensitivities, so you will need to be careful about what you feed your dog and how much the environment affects your pup. Most of the ailments are not life-threatening – they have a life expectancy between 13 and 15 years. They are also incredibly easy to groom with their short-haired coats.

You Had Me at Woof

You Had Me at Woof PDF Author: Julie Klam

ISBN: 1101444738
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 138

Book Description
Look out for Julie's new book, The Almost Legendary Morris Sisters. The hilarious and heartfelt chronicle of a woman learning the secrets of love, health, and happiness from some very surprising teachers: her dogs. Julie Klam was thirty, single, and working as a part-time clerk in an insurance company, wondering if she would ever meet the man she could spend the rest of her life with. And then it happened. She met the irresistible Otto, her first in a long line of Boston terriers, and fell instantly in love. You Had Me at Woof is the often hilarious and always sincere story of how one woman discovered life's most important lessons from her relationships with her canine companions. From Otto, Julie realized what it might feel like to find "the one." She learned to share her home, her heart, and her limited resources with another, and she found an authentic friend in the process. But that was just the beginning. Over the years her brood has grown to one husband, one daughter, and several Boston terriers. And although she had much to learn about how to care for them-walks at 2 a.m., vet visits, behavior problems-she was surprised and delighted to find that her dogs had more wisdom to convey to her than she had ever dreamed. And caring for them has made her a better person-and completely and utterly opened her heart. Riotously funny and unexpectedly poignant, You Had Me at Woof recounts the hidden surprises, pleasures, and revelations of letting any mutt, beagle, terrier, or bulldog go charging through your world. Katz on Dogs

Katz on Dogs PDF Author: Jon Katz
Publisher: Random House Trade Paperbacks
ISBN: 0812974344
Category : Pets
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
In a nation where our love of dogs keeps growing and dog ownership has reached an all-time high, confusion about dogs and their behavioral problems is skyrocketing. Many dogs are out of control, untrained, chewing up furniture, taking medication for anxiety, and biting millions of people a year. Now, in this groundbreaking new guide, Jon Katz, a leading authority on the human-canine bond, offers a powerful and practical philosophy for living with a dog, from the moment we decide to get one to the sad day when one dies. Conventional training methods often fail dog owners, but Katz argues that we know our dogs better than anyone else possibly could, and therefore we are well suited to train them. It is imperative, he says, that we think rationally and responsibly about how we choose, train, and live with the dogs we love, and the more we learn about ourselves, the better we can recognize their wonderful animal natures. Misinterpreting dogs is a profound obstacle to understanding them. Katz believes that both people and dogs are unique–a chow differs from a Lab just as a city dweller differs from a farmer–and he describes how such individuality isn’t addressed by even the best and most popular training methods. Not every training theory is for everyone, notes Katz, but almost anyone can train a dog and live with him comfortably. Katz on Dogs is filled with no-nonsense advice and answers to such key questions as: • What kind of dog should I have? Is there is a specific breed or kind of dog for my personality, family, or living situation? • What is the best way to train a dog? • Can I trust my vet? • How often (and for how long) can a dog be left alone? • Is it preferable to have only one dog, or are more better? • What are the secrets to successful housebreaking? • What are my dogs thinking, if anything? • How can I walk my dog instead of having her walk me? • Is it ever okay to give away a dog you love? • When is it time to put my dog down? Katz draws from his own experience, his interactions with thousands of dog owners, vets, breeders, dog rescue workers, trainers, and behaviorists, and he has tested his approach with volunteer dog owners around the country. Their helpful and often inspiring stories illustrate how all of us can live well with our dogs. You can do it, Katz contends. You can live a loving and harmonious life with your dog.
