Yearbook of the European Convention on Human Rights / Annuaire de la Convention Europeenne des Droits de L’Homme

Yearbook of the European Convention on Human Rights / Annuaire de la Convention Europeenne des Droits de L’Homme PDF Author: Council of Europe Staff
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9401512213
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 1188

Book Description
Volume I3 of the Yearbook of the European Convention on Human Rights relates to the year I970 and reflects a return to the usual pattern of activity under the Convention during that year, after the exceptional situation produced in I969 by the "Greek Case". This volume is published somewhat later than usual, because an extra volume in this series has been published between volumes I2 and I3 containing the Report of the European Com mission of Human Rights and the Resolution of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe relating to the "Greek Case". Part I of this Volume contains, as usual, the basic texts, chief among which are the amendments now made to the Convention following the entry into force on 2I September I970 of the Third Protocol, which relates to the procedure of the Commission. On the same date, the Second Protocol also entered into force, conferring on the Court of Human Rights competence to give advisory opinions. The text of this Protocol is to be found in Volume 6 at pages 3ff. The amendments and additions to the Rules of Court consequent upon the entry into force of the Second Protocol are set out in Part I of this Volume.

Great Lion of God

Great Lion of God PDF Author: Taylor Caldwell
Publisher: Open Road Media
ISBN: 1504042956
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 589

Book Description
New York Times Bestseller: A “beautifully written” and “truly outstanding” novel based on the life of Paul the Apostle (The Cincinnati Enquirer). Born a veritable great lion of God to a devout Jewish family, Saul of Tarsus is raised by his parents to embrace their love of humanity. Dogged by what he perceives as a lack of true faith, he embarks on a journey to save his people from sacrilege. But on the road to Damascus a vision of the resurrected Jesus changes the course of his life. Converting to Christianity, the newly christened Paul transforms from persecutor of blasphemers into apostle to the gentiles, becoming one of the supreme influences on the Catholic Church and the Western world. Great Lion of God paints a unique and very human portrait of Saint Paul, one of the most passionate, dauntless, and complex figures of early Christianity—Pharisee, lawyer, theologian, and above all, a “man like ourselves with our own despairs, doubts, anxieties and angers and intolerances, and ‘lusts of the flesh.’” The central novel in author Taylor Caldwell’s biblical trilogy, which also includes Dear and Glorious Physician and I, Judas, Great Lion of God is both “sheer entertainment” and a moving tribute to the majesty and power of the Christian faith (Fort Worth Star-Telegram). This ebook features an illustrated biography of Taylor Caldwell including rare images from the author’s estate.

The Donut

The Donut PDF Author: Steven Penfold
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 0802095453
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 269

Book Description
In Canada, the donut is often thought of as the unofficial national food. Donuts are sold at every intersection and rest stop, celebrated in song and story as symbols of Canadian identity, and one chain in particular, Tim Horton's, has become a veritable icon with over 2500 shops across the country. But there is more to the donut than these and other expressions of 'snackfood patriotism' would suggest. In this study, Steve Penfold puts the humble donut in its historical context, examining how one deep-fried confectionary became, not only a mass commodity, but an edible symbol of Canadianness. Penfold examines the history of the donut in light of broader social, economic, and cultural issues, and uses the donut as a window onto key developments in twentieth-century Canada such as the growth of a 'consumer society,' the relationship between big business and community, and the ironic qualities of Canadian national identity. He goes on to explore the social and political conditions that facilitated the rapid rise and steady growth of donut shops across the country. Based on a wide range of sources, from commercial and government reports to personal interviews, The Donut is a comprehensive and fascinating look at one of Canada's most popular products. It offers original insights on consumer culture, mass consumption, and the dynamics of Canadian history.
