The Tswana

The Tswana PDF Author: Isaac Schapera
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317408144
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 112

Book Description
First published in 1953 and this edition in 1991, this book was created in association with the International African Institute. Since its first publication, anthropology and African Studies have changed a great deal, but the bedrock of both remains unchanged: solid, sensitive ethnographic and historical accounts of the peoples and cultures of the continent. Part One is by Isaac Schapera whose documentation of life and times in the Bechuanaland Protectorate stands as a starkly detailed chronical of an African population in a rapidly changing world. Schapera was one of the few anthropologists who spoke frankly of the rural predicament of rural Africans under colonialism. Far from describing the Tswana as a closed or timeless ‘society’, he locates the people in their political and economic context, and in so doing, has left behind an extraordinary record. This edition of The Tswana consists of the original text to which has been added a second part by John L. Comaroff, which covers the transformation of Tswana life in Botswana and South Africa 1953-85, plus a much enlarged bibliography. Together, the parts of the book make a valuable summary of an exceedingly rich and ethnographic and historical record that will continue to serve as an indispensable tool in research and teaching.

The Unbroken Chains of Apartheid

The Unbroken Chains of Apartheid PDF Author: Matsime Simon Mohapi
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1462889069
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 125

Book Description
Before 1652 there were no labourers, no workers, no servants and no servitude. All that was, was labour of love. Black people worked their own farms. They were Masters on their own right. The African land and its wealth gave our great grand parents the right to be Masters. Black children are the children of Masters! They have the right to know that the great are only great because we are on our knees! They have the right to know because knowledge is power! They must know that horrible accidents happened in South Africa after 1652. Historical accidents did occur! Historical accidents which were deliberate and were designed to put the destiny of a South African Black child in suffering and poverty forever. Then there was no poverty and no million orphans. There were million cattle and million hectors of land. There was human dignity the meaning of which was freedom from fear, hatred, and poverty. Matsime Simon Mohapi, from: The Unbroken Chains of Apartheid South Africa.

History of South Africa

History of South Africa PDF Author: Thula Simpson
Publisher: Hurst Publishers
ISBN: 1787389219
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 667

Book Description
South Africa was born in war, has been cursed by crises and ruptures, and today stands on a precipice once again. This book explores the country’s tumultuous journey from the Second Anglo-Boer War to 2021. Drawing on diaries, letters, oral testimony and diplomatic reports, Thula Simpson follows the South African people through the battles, elections, repression, resistance, strikes, insurrections, massacres, crashes and epidemics that have shaped the nation. Tracking South Africa’s path from colony to Union and from apartheid to democracy, Simpson documents the influence of key figures including Jan Smuts, Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko, P.W. Botha, Thabo Mbeki and Cyril Ramaphosa. He offers detailed accounts of watershed events like the 1922 Rand Revolt, the Defiance Campaign, Sharpeville, the Soweto uprising and the Marikana massacre. He sheds light on the roles of Gandhi, Churchill, Castro and Thatcher, and explores the impact of the World Wars, the armed struggle and the Border War. Simpson’s history charts the post-apartheid transition and the phases of ANC rule, from Rainbow Nation to transformation; state capture to ‘New Dawn’. Along the way, it reveals the divisions and solidarities of sport; the nation’s economic travails; and painful pandemics, from the Spanish flu to AIDS and Covid-19.
